In Loving Memory of Ruben Mercado Perez

January 28, 1963 – April 3, 2026

With profound sadness and deep love, we announce the passing of Ruben Mercado Perez, who entered eternal rest on Good Friday, April 3, 2026, at 3:30 p.m. in Beaufort, South Carolina, at the age of 63.

Born on January 28, 1963, in Baltimore, Maryland, Ruben was the beloved son of Dr. Ruperto Perez, who preceded him in death, and Dr. Bella Perez of Hilton Head, South Carolina. He was a treasured son, devoted brother, cherished uncle, loyal friend, and respected professional whose presence brought warmth, laughter, brilliance, and comfort to everyone who was blessed enough to know him.

Ruben is lovingly survived by his mother, Bella Perez; his brothers Toti Perez of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Rodney Perez and his wife Gina Singleton and their sons, Gavin and Grayson of Asheville, North Carolina; his sisters Belinda Smith and her husband Chris and their sons, Jeremy Smith and his wife Gianna, and their daughter Allegra and Benjamin Smith, of Woodstock, Georgia, and Betsy Perez and her husband Will Weyer of Nederland, Colorado; his Aunt Alma Castillo and her husband Robert of Danville, Virginia; and his beloved dog, Millie. He also leaves behind a wide circle of extended family, colleagues, and dear friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Ruben graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, VA and was proud alumnus of Marquette University, where he earned his degree in Biomedical Engineering in 1985. His education reflected the rare blend of analytical brilliance and creative insight that would define his life and career.

Over the course of a dynamic and accomplished professional journey, Ruben held a variety of influential roles across finance, technology, publishing, nonprofit organizations, and research. In Boston, he worked with Harvard Management Company, helping manage Harvard University’s endowment fund. In New York City—a place he dearly loved—he brought his creativity and strategic insight to NJOnline in marketing. As an entrepreneur, Ruben created INDXLAB, a software tool for the financial industry that showcased his vision and innovative spirit.

He went on to serve as Senior Project Manager at Thomson Reuters, Associate Director and Business Analyst at Fitch Ratings, E-Commerce Analyst and Digital Project Manager for Scholastic, and Business Data Analyst for Girl Scouts of the USA. In each role, Ruben was known for bringing clarity, collaboration, and humor to complex challenges, making him both deeply respected and genuinely loved by colleagues.

In the final chapter of his career, Ruben served as a Research Analyst with the Building Performance Association, where his gift for turning complex information into meaningful stories continued to shine. Colleagues described him as collaborative, thoughtful, valuable, and someone who brought humor to any situation. Some affectionately called him a “unicorn” and “magical,” a reflection of just how rare and remarkable he truly was. He possessed an extraordinary ability to synthesize vast amounts of data and transform it into a compelling story, blending analytical rigor with human understanding in a way few could. His LinkedIn bio perfectly captured his spirit in a simple, powerful line: “I build things and solve problems.”

Yet for all of his professional accomplishments, Ruben was known most for the way he made people feel. He was a man of quiet grace and unforgettable presence. Though soft-spoken, he carried a remarkably big personality—one that drew people in effortlessly. He was quick-witted, deeply funny, and endlessly thoughtful, with a gift for making others laugh exactly when they needed it most. He loved to surprise people with spontaneous gifts—some lavish, others trivially whimsical—simply for the joy of making someone feel seen and loved. In his thoughtfulness, he cherished creating lasting memories with family and friends from what others might consider small moments. To Ruben, no experience was ever inconsequential. He made dear friends everywhere he lived, and every community he called home became richer because he was there.

Though he embraced the many cities and people he encountered throughout his life, Ruben also held a deep affection for his hometown of Danville, Virginia, a place that remained close to his heart, recognizing the city and its people as part of the story that shaped him.

He loved the outdoors and found joy in the beauty of the natural world, but his soul truly lived in the arts. Ruben wrote short stories and poems that pulled at the heartstrings and captured the tender truths of life. He was also a passionate supporter of theater, and he loved all forms of music. He was especially drawn to carefully crafted lyrics that revealed the essence of human nature, beauty, sorrow, and love.

In his final moments, Ruben was surrounded by love. Family members were by his side, and he was peaceful and comfortable, free from pain. And the nurses shared in the moment as he went on his way. That was Ruben—impossible not to love, impossible to forget.

He never asked for anything, yet he gave everything. He brought smiles to the faces of all who knew him. His generosity of spirit, his humor, his gentle wisdom, and the love he gave so freely will remain his enduring legacy.

Ruben was a remarkable soul, worthy of celebration—and celebrate him we will. Be well, big brother. Tell Dad we said hello when you see him. We love and miss you terribly, Ruben, but we know we will see you again.
