Russell "Ed" Allyn

1941 - 2026

Russell "Ed" Allyn, 84, of Culver, Indiana, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026. Born on August 23, 1941, in Rensselaer, Indiana, to Floyd and Helen Allyn, Ed grew up on a small dairy farm in Wheatfield. Those early years—working alongside his father, learning the value of discipline, humility, and hard work—shaped the man he would become.
A 1959 graduate of Wheatfield High School, Ed went on to serve his country in the United States Army, earning the rank of Sergeant. His military service instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty, leadership, and integrity.
After completing his service, Ed built a distinguished career in manufacturing, where he earned numerous accolades in quality assurance management. He continued his education throughout his career, earning certifications in management and leadership that reflected his commitment to excellence and growth - proof that he never stopped learning, striving, or pushing himself to be better.
In 1973, Ed moved to Culver with his wife, Kathy (Misch), and their six children—Jim, John, Joe, Julie, Mike, and Matt. From the moment he arrived, Ed became a pillar of the community. He coached Little League, guided 5th and 6th grade basketball teams, and supported Culver High School athletics. He served as town president, volunteered at Marshall County's voting center, and lent his carpentry skills to countless remodeling projects around town. Wherever there was a need, Ed showed up.
Ed was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He offered his help, humor, wisdom, and steady presence to his family and to anyone fortunate enough to cross his path. His retirement years were filled with the things he loved most: tending to his forest, orchard, and garden; fishing and hosting memorable fish fries; and building and fixing anything that needed a skilled hand.
One of Ed's greatest joys in retirement was his work with his beloved Golden Retriever therapy dogs, Cutter and Tanner. For more than a decade, he visited local hospitals, schools, and nursing homes, bringing comfort, companionship, and joy to countless people. Through these visits, he formed deep friendships and touched lives in ways that will be remembered for years to come.
Ed is survived by his wife of 54 years, Kathy; his children Jim Allyn, John (Michelle) Allyn, Joe (Lisa) Allyn, Julie (Jamie) VantWoud of Culver, IN, Mike (Molly) Allyn of Longmont, CO, and Matt (Lisa) Allyn of Valparaiso, IN; his grandchildren Mark (Kate) Allyn, Alyssa Allyn, Kyle Allyn, Tim (Lauren) Allyn, Zachary Allyn, Addyson Allyn, Devin (Ashley) VantWoud, Stephan VantWoud, Roman VantWoud, Madeleine Allyn, Adrienne Allyn, Olivia Allyn, Aggie Allyn, and Aurek Allyn; and his great-grandchildren Neil Allyn, Devyn Vantwoud, and Augustus Vantwoud.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Helen, and sisters, Ruth and Jane, and his family takes comfort in knowing he is now reunited with them in Heaven. Throughout his life, you always knew where Ed stood—steadfast in his values, unwavering in his faith, and generous in spirit. Today, we smile knowing he stands in the presence of the Lord, greeted with the words: "Well done, good and faithful servant."
