Sanderson "Sandy" Hill

May 24,1949-March 13, 2026

Sandy was born in San Francisco and raised in Redwood City. After high school he enlisted in the Marine Corps and went on to fight on the front lines of the Vietnam War, where he was wounded in both legs by machine gun fire. He later overcame addiction and became an ardent Veteran For Peace, regularly protesting war in front of the courthouse month-after-month, even in the rain. He spoke at local high schools against war and lived by the message "You can honor the warrior without honoring the war."

He was a college graduate, husband and father, poker and boating enthusiast, actor with the Ukiah Players Theatre, SPACE supporter, green thumb, motorcyclist, honkey-tonk piano player, doorman at the Hopland Brewery, and a 49er Faithful to the end. Sandy was charismatic, kind, and loved his family.

Sandy passed peacefully. He is survived by his former wife and caretaker, Laurel Near; his daughters Devon Near-Hill and Anna Jones; Anna’s mother, Robin King Hill; step-sons Quinn and Russell VanAntwerp, brother Clifford Hill, cousins Gregory Rossoff, Donna McNamara, Anette Sorensen, and Linda Moriarty. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions to SPACE (School of Performing Arts & Cultural Education) in celebration of Sandy's dedication to the arts and/or Veterans For Peace.
