Sandra E. Townsend, born Sandra Leona Eakin, passed away on Monday, October 6, 2025 at the age of 84 in Waldorf, Maryland. She passed away at home peacefully and surrounded by her loved ones.
Sandra, affectionately known as Sandy to friends and Mom Mom to her family, was a pillar of strength and love to everyone who knew her. Her love for God and unwavering faithfulness to Him was the foundation of how she conducted her life, marriage and raising of her family.
Sandy was born on September 16, 1941 in Richmond, Virginia to Owen Ashton Eakin and Lucetta Virginia Eakin (McKenzie). Sandy spent her childhood days in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia before moving to Indian Head, Maryland where she resided with her mother and older brother, Robert "Sonny" Owen Eakin.
Sandy married Thomas Edward Townsend on March 3, 1962 and resided in Oxon Hill, Maryland where they together lovingly raised their three children Trina, Richard, and Joanna.
Sandy worked as a secretary for the government before devoting her life to raising her children and grandchildren. She was a faithful servant of Christ and volunteered her time to many church ministries. She found joy and happiness tending to the beautiful flowers she had proudly grown in her garden.
Sandy is survived by a large and loving family. She is survived by her children Trina Rigby, Richard Townsend and Joanna Reynolds. She is survived by nine grandchildren. Jason Sorghardt, Timothy Townsend, Andrew Cummins (Trina), Victoria Townsend, Aidan Townsend, Kathryn Townsend (Richard), Julia Reynolds, Ashleigh Reynolds and Chase Reynolds (Joanna). She is survived by four great-grandchildren. Jackson Sorghardt (Jason), Thomas Cummins (Andrew), Zachary Townsend (Timothy), and Elliott Reynolds (Julia).
Sandy is proceeded in death by her father Owen Eakin, mother Lucetta Hardesty, brother Robert "Sonny" Eakin, husband Thomas Townsend, and grandson Jonathan Townsend.
Funeral will take place at Huntt Funeral Home located in Waldorf, Maryland on Thursday, October 16, 2025. Viewing and service are open to all who wish to pay their respects. Viewing will be from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, followed by a 12:00 PM service and funeral procession to Trinity Memorial Gardens where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband and mother.
