Santiago Gomez de Segura, age 83, returned to the Lord on Monday, the 12th, leaving behind a legacy of faith, devotion, and quiet strength.
Known to most as Jim, he was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Martha, for 48 years. Their lifelong partnership began with a certainty that defined their marriage, as he proposed after just one month of dating. Together, they raised two children, Matthew and Barbie, but he gained another daughter, Sara, through her marriage to Matt. He was a proud grandfather to Xavier and Zoe, who brought him immense joy and pride.
Born in Spain, he immigrated at the age of 24 in search of opportunity and a better life for his future family. A tribute to his gratitude and commitment to his adopted country, he proudly became a United States citizen on July 4, 1986. Though he built his life abroad, he remained deeply connected to his roots and to his family in Spain. He is lovingly remembered by his sister, Maria Delores (Oscar) and his brothers, Carmelo (Maribel) and Jesus (Antonia) and was preceded in death by his brother, Fernando (Pilar).
Through hard work and perseverance, he built a life rooted in responsibility and service. He worked various construction jobs over the years and ultimately dedicated 20 years with Amoco Oil Refinery. He often worked long overtime hours to ensure his children always had enough, quietly placing his family's needs above his own. He was known for his reliability, dedication, and strong work ethic.
A man of deep Catholic faith, he devoted much of his life to serving his church and was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He loved reading and studying his faith, regularly watching Mass and the Rosary on television.
He deeply cherished helping and watching his son play baseball, faithfully supporting him through practices, private lessons, and games. One of his greatest joys was also listening to his daughter play the piano. These were but a few moments that reflected his steady presence, quiet encouragement, and deep appreciation for family, with simple blessings.
He will be remembered for his faith, humility, devotion to family, and living a life that set a quiet yet powerful example. Thoughtful and kind, he guided with steady love and a reassuring presence. Though he did not seek attention, his influence touched all who knew him. He leaves behind a family who will carry his lessons, values, and love always in their hearts.
Funeral Services will held on Wednesday, January 28th at St. Joseph the Worker Parish located at 7405 S. Redwood Road in West Jordan. A viewing will take place from 10:00-11:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 11:00. Afterward, a light luncheon will be held at the hall of St. Joseph the Worker where all are welcome to stay and visit.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that acts of kindness be extended to others—old friends, new acquaintances, or anyone in need.
