Sheila Scanlan-Towers of St. Albans, Vermont, passed November 11, 2025 at the age of 78. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend and she will be deeply missed.
Born March 15, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan, Sheila graduated from Cass Tech High School and then moved east to attend Parsons School of Design and later Goddard College.
A talented maker, Sheila dedicated much of her life to teaching others in the creative fields. She worked as an art teacher for years, sharing her passion for creativity with elementary school students at the Shelburne and Addison public schools, and she also taught handwork at the Waldorf School. She always nurtured the creative spirit of those around her, passing on her love of art to her daughter and grandkids.
She spent many years involved with auto racing, working on Bobby Dragon's racing team and ultimately meeting her husband Bill at the racetrack. During that time period, she also worked on the Richmond rescue.
Sheila was a spiritual person, attending Burlington Friends Meeting in the 80's and then becoming a member of the First Congregational Church of Burlington. Later she attended Crossroads Chapel in Ferrisburg, cultivating many friendships within its devoted community. Sheila volunteered her time to a number of different charities over the years, most notably Feed My Starving Children and the Humane Society of Chittenden County. The natural world was always a big part of her life, from her love of birdwatching to her many pets to her passion for gardening.
Sheila will be remembered as a kind, friendly person with a boundless sense of humor; her passion for creativity was rivaled only by her love for her family.
She is survived by her daughter Faith Provencher, son-in-law Mike Provencher and their children Hadley and Cayden of Reading, MA; her brother Kevin Scanlan and sister-in-law Mary McCatty and their son Ty of New York, NY; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Don W. Towers.
A service will be held on December 21st at 1pm at the Cross Life Church in Ferrisburgh, VT.
