Shelby Jean Gilland Pierson, aged 84, passed away on February 19, 2026, in Lithia, Florida. Born on March 1, 1941, in New Port Tennessee, Shelby was a beacon of love and kindness throughout her life, dedicating herself to her family, faith and community.
Shelby's early years were in New Port Tennessee, where she was born and raised and attended New Port Grammar School. The foundation for her lifelong roles as a devoted wife, mother, Mema, daughter, sister, and friend started in childhood. She was lovingly known for her nurturing and giving personality, always placing the needs of others before her own.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mamie Ramsey Gilland; her husband, Walter Phillip Pierson Sr.; her son, Donald Phillip Pierson; and siblings, Faye Hill, Mary Alexander, and Terry Gilland. Shelby's legacy continues through her daughter, Debbie Pierson Cooper (Stephen), grandchildren, Kayla Pierson Mason (Shawn) and Matthew Pierson, and great-grandchildren, Kaidance and Makenna Mason. She is also survived by her sisters, Geraldine Dalton, Irene Gilland, Linda Sue Jones, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members in Tennessee.
Throughout her life, Shelby was an active member of several worship communities, including Valrico Worship Center, Keysville Assembly of God, and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Her faith was a cornerstone of her existence, deeply intertwined with her daily activities and hobbies. Shelby found joy in the simple pleasures of life, like in taking long walks, cooking, playing card games, reading the Bible, and engaging in frequent shopping trips and lunches out. She was an avid coffee drinker and enjoyed word searches, reading, watching Christian TV programs, and attending church services. Shelby loved to travel to Tennessee to visit family every opportunity that she got and loved playing with her grandbabies and watching them play ball. Shelby also had a passion for nature, particularly bird watching and moon gazing, and she cherished the warmth of the weather on a sunny day and the sight of baby animals. She was also a big fan of Elvis Presley. Shelby's interests reflected her vibrant and nurturing spirit.
Her life will be celebrated on what would have been her 85th birthday, March 1, 2026, at Valrico Worship Center, a place that held great significance in her life. Shelby's legacy of kindness, generosity, and love will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. Shelby's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and faith, leaving behind a legacy that will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
