Send Flowers Plant A Tree
In Loving Memory of Shirley Ann Stevens Kyle

Shirley Ann Stevens Kyle passed away on December 20, 2025, in Williamsburg, Virginia. She was born in Ashland, Virginia, in 1935 and was lovingly raised by her aunt, Irene Edwards Kelley, and uncle, Henry Kelley.

In 1963, Shirley married William Reid Kyle, Jr. As Bill followed his calling into the United Methodist ministry, Shirley walked faithfully beside him. They were married for 46 years until Bill’s death in 2010, serving churches throughout the Virginia United Methodist Conference as a devoted team. Wherever they went, Shirley’s presence was a gift.

Shirley was known for her angelic singing voice, especially at Christmas, when she sang “O Holy Night” in celebration of the birth of her Lord and Savior.

She had a true green thumb—every home she lived in was filled with flourishing flowers and tomato plants. Feeding the birds brought her joy, and long walks on the beach in Nags Head, collecting shells, brought her peace.

Shirley also showed love through baking. Her grandchildren eagerly awaited the cookies she made just for them, and her German chocolate cakes were a cherished tradition at family birthdays.

Gentle, kind, and faithful, Shirley was truly a butterfly of beauty. She is survived by her sons, William Reid Kyle, III of Williamsburg and Christopher Stevens Kyle and his wife, Mari, of Harrisonburg; grandchildren Olivia Jackson, Abigail Kyle, and Jonathan Kyle; sister-in-law Ella Kyle Wimer; nephew William Nevin Wimer; niece Rebecca Ambrose and her husband Michael; great-nephew Kyle Carlson; and great-niece Makayla Carlson.
She was preceded in death by two beloved grandchildren, Elizabeth Stevens Kyle and William Christopher Kyle.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

’Tis a gift to be simple, ’tis a gift to be free,
’Tis a gift to come down where we ought to be;
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
’Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan’t be ashamed;
to turn, turn, will be my delight.
Till turning, turning we come round right.
