Shirley Mae “Lil Bit” Lewis crossed over to the ancestral realm Monday, December 15, 2025 at her home in River Ridge LA. Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she would transform her home into a Winter Wonderland every Christmas. It is only fitting that she went to her heavenly home just in time to celebrate Christmas in heaven.

She met her forever fur baby Codey at the Rainbow Bridge, and she was greeted as the Lewis clan’s newest ancestor by her biological parents: Rev. R.H.Lewis and Mary Brumfield Lewis; her mother, Alice Gordon; her father, Papa Edward Gordon; her sisters: Ruth I-Ella Bishop, Ivorynell Moody, Eloise Cobbs, Turner Mai Filtzpatrick, April Gross, Mary F. Lewis; her brothers: Louis “Tang” Lewis, Samuel Lewis, William Lewis, Henry Lewis, and Lloyd Henry Lewis.

She was born on Friday, June 28, 1946, to the union of Rev. Ruth Henry and Mary Lewis nee Brumfield, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Shirley was raised by her paternal aunt and uncle, Alice Lewis Gordon and Edward ”Papa Ed” Gordon, who became her mother and father after she lost both her parents at 3.

Shirley received her high school diploma from Booker T. Washington High School in 1964; her Associate's degree in Business Administration from Delgado Community College; and her Bachelor’s degree from Southern University at New Orleans.

She worked at Charity Hospital as a Chief Clerk Specialist for over 30 years until her retirement. Her 16-hour workdays in the Accident Room were normal. She truly lived one of her favorite sayings- “Work Works!”

When she wasn’t working, she was an avid reader, played a mean game of Scrabble, Tonk, Spades, and, in later years, following politics became her favorite pastime. Her passion for politics often landed her in Facebook jail. She also loved watching action movies and reality TV.

She loved shopping at Walmart. Her favorite meals were succotash, a 3-piece spicy white meal from Popeyes, with a Pepsi. She also loved her sweets and ‘junk’.

Recently, she shared a revelation she had about life. “Life means loving and accepting the works of God, and just being you and loving people…Enjoying life and celebrating the life we have…What will be, will be-flowers, the beauty of a sunrise, the setting of a sun…All of that’s beauty.”

Shirley, affectionately called “Lil Bit” by her family, had two children, Stacy “Madmoiselle Babydoll” (Billy) Lewis-Goins and Shainnen “Meime” Lewis to carry on her legacy.
She leaves to cherish her memory her grandbaby, JeBari Lewis, whom she affectionately called “Baby Jay,” and her immortality, interchangeably; her grand fur babies CheBe, Moyo, and Josephine. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Boyd-Brooks Funeral & Cremation Service.
