Shirley Phyllis Polinger
1937 - 2026
Shirley Phyllis Polinger of Wells, Maine, formerly of Washington, D.C., passed away on January 3, 2026, at the age of 88. Shirley was one of a kind and unique in the best sense.
An adventurous and spirited soul, Shirley downhill skied into her 80s, loved boating, and enjoyed driving her RV across the country. She painted dozens of beautiful watercolors, played the ukulele, and was an avid bridge player. A dedicated educator, she taught for more than 40 years and was also a certified sign language interpreter.
She shared 45 years with her beloved partner, Patricia Danforth, and was devoted to her many nieces and nephews.
Known for her sharp wit and love of good jokes, Shirley lived fully, boldly, and on her own terms and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
