Smyth (Smitty) Pierce of Jamaica Plain passed on May 6, 2025, aged 51. His loss leaves behind an immense chasm in the lives of those who knew and loved him, including his longtime partner Marcela, his mother Louise, his brothers Tom, Sam and Nick, and the many others who had the pleasure of knowing him over the years.

Though the basic beats of Smyth's life are relatively easy to recount-he was born on October 5, 1973 and raised in Jamaica Plain; he attended Boston Latin School and Pomona College; and he lived for a time in Los Angeles before returning to Boston, where he worked in fine dining for many years-it was the confluence of his particular qualities that made Smyth such a big-hearted and engaging person.

Smyth was naturally good-humored, putting a cheerful front forward, even when things were difficult. The warmth of his personality always made those around him feel welcome and always left people feeling like they were in the presence of a friend.

Smyth was funny. His humor could be gently personal or satirical, and was often absurdist, but it would always make people want to laugh out loud. He used humor to be self-deprecating, to poke at cultural trends, or to express his many strongly held opinions. However he was using it, it was meant to pull those around him close, and to make them feel like they were in on the joke.

But Smyth's most enduring quality was his generosity, which manifested itself in countless ways, both big and small. Whether it was offering a place to stay to family and friends when they needed it, hosting delicious meals at his home, personally delivering an arm-full of food to a lucky recipient, or spending hours making new friendships or deepening old ones, Smyth freely gave of himself.

Smyth will be missed dearly by all who knew him. Please join the family at Mann and Rodgers Funeral Home in Jamaica Plain on November 1, 2025 to celebrate his life and mourn his passing.
