Sofia Kennedy (1945–2025)
Sofia Kennedy (Melka) lived an extraordinary life—full of love, hardship, joy, adventure, heartache, and miracles. Born in post-war Germany in November 1945, she overcame adversity with grace and unwavering faith. She trusted God to guide her path and leaned on Him through every challenge.
A mother of nine, Sofia raised a blended family with strength and compassion. She pursued education, creativity, and citizenship, and embraced life as a widow with curiosity and joy.
Her later years were filled with travel, geology (West Valley Rock Club), friendship, and meaningful conversations.
Sofia is preceded in death by her mother, Bernice Melka; her brother, Leon Melka; her husband, Bob Kennedy; a stepson, Keith Umphrey; two daughters, Venus Kennedy and Kitty Dillon; numerous friends, and beloved pets.
She is survived by her brother, John Melka; her best friend of nearly 70 years, Donna Melka; two sons, Michael Kennedy and Patrick Kennedy; four daughters, Hanna Unger, Mary Williams, June Garber, and Michelle Kennedy; numerous nieces and nephews; 15 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a circle of cherished friends.
She is and will continue to be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. She passed away at home, surrounded by loving family who came from near and far, hospice, caregivers, and one, especially extraordinary human being who became her friend and family to Sofia’s adult children.
A celebration of life took place at 10:30am, November 14, 2025 at Grace Fellowship church in Buckeye, AZ.
