Sonia Levison

1928 - 2026

Sonia was born in Matanzas, Cuba, to Etelvina Delgado and Rafael Sotolongo. She was fiercely devoted to her parents, ten siblings, and family, remaining close to them throughout her entire life. Sonia arrived in the United States in the 1940s, eventually settling in Miami where she met and married the love of her life Milton Levison. They were a dynamic duo who leave behind a legacy of joy, generosity, and warmth for everyone who loved and adored them.

Though Sonia was fierce, she possessed an unmatched sense of empathy. She was a champion for those in need, especially animals, teaching us all by example to care for creatures of all kinds. To have been one of her many dogs or cats was a true blessing. Her home was always full of life, including rescued stray and injured animals, a monkey, and her loyal parrot Lucita, who survives her.

A lover of nature, Sonia was an avid gardener who reveled in her lush tropical plants. Over the years, her gardens hosted tranquil mornings, pool parties, and family gatherings. These beautiful landscapes served as an apt symbol of her encompassing love, vibrant hospitality, and her ability to create an oasis for everyone lucky enough to be in her life.

Sonia was the heartbeat of our family. She took wonderful care of everyone, providing a sense of security that we all felt deeply. Her generosity reached far beyond our family circle. She had a keen eye and the most compassionate heart for those less fortunate, always finding a way to provide for those in need without ever asking for recognition. She understood that being strong meant having the capacity to lift others up. To all of her many nieces and nephews, she was more than just an aunt. We will miss her smile, her quick wit, her childhood stories and funny jokes. We will miss having her in our lives, but as Sonia always used to say, c'est la vie!

For those who wish to honor her, please consider a gesture that reflects the things that she held dear while making our world a better and more beautiful place.

For her love of Nature: Plant a tree or a favorite flower in your garden, or make a gift in her name to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, a place that mirrors the beauty she cultivated throughout her life.

For her love of Animals: Volunteer at your local animal rescue, or consider a donation in her memory to Friends of Miami Animals (FOMA), an animal advocacy group that improves the lives of pets in our community.

For her love of Humanity: Gather those you love around the table, or donate in her memory to Chapman Partnership, which provides comprehensive, trauma-informed care for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Miami-Dade County.
