Stephen Michael Kushner

Stephen (Hebrew: Shmuel) Michael Kushner, 81, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026.

Born in Chicago on July 30, 1944, to Harry and Bella Kushner. After graduating from Northeastern Illinois University, he devoted most of his professional life to teaching and coaching. In addition to teaching in the Chicago Public Schools and then at Sunset Ridge in Northfield, Steve advanced his career as a Special Education Teacher at Grayslake Community High School. He was also instrumental in developing youth Wrestling in Chicago and throughout the state of Illinois, and growing the Wrestling program at Grayslake. His priority was mentoring his athletes, helping many to succeed on the mat and as parents, coaches and educators, as well as in countless other walks of life.

He is survived by his wife of eight years, Lisa Dye, and his children, Julie (Shawn) Jones, Andy (Kelli) Kushner, Brad Kushner, his stepson, Walker (Hyeji) Vance and his eight grandchildren, Delaney (Tyler) Krumsee, Braeden Jones; Alli and Drew Kushner; Hattie, Emmett and Hayes Kushner; and Havi Vance. Steve was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Patti Kushner (Levitt). He is also survived by his sisters, Robyn and Susie, and preceded by their sister, Susan.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Rolly Ventura for the loving care and friendship he provided to Steve for the last 5 years of his life.

Steve was loved by many, and he was a cherished friend and mentor to many more. A devoted Grandfather, he gave all he had to be with his grandchildren - proudly supporting them at their games and performances - and sharing his love of the Cubs, travel, and the beauty of our world with his growing family.

A celebration of life will be held at the home of Lisa & Steve, 8543 Kedvale Ave, Skokie, Illinois, on July 11, 2026, from 1-4:00. To help honor Steve's love of the Chicago Cubs, please wear your Cubs gear.
