Steve passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. In his passing, we lost a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and dear friend.
Steve is survived by his wife Pam, whom he often described as "The song in his heart and the girl of his dreams". Their life together was filled with love, laughter, friendship, and devotion to their family. They shared a desire to travel the world, enjoy good food, and create new experiences and friendships, whether at their favorite Paris bistro or at new local restaurants. Together, they embraced life with curiosity and a spirit of adventure.
He was a proud father to Paige, Justin (Lucie), Drew (Morgan), Patrick (Sarah), and Barrett, and he embraced fatherhood with steady guidance, humility, and love. In recent years, his greatest pride was in seeing the fabulous parents his children had become.
He was known as "Pops" to his beloved grandchildren—Blake, Hayden, Justin, Lillian, Eliza, Jack, Elizabeth, and Katherine—and he called the guys "buddy," and the girls" young lady" because to him, that's exactly what they were.
Born on August 29, 1949, to Harriet Shafer Nangle and Judge James Francis Nangle, Sr., Steve was the youngest of 12 children in a lively, deeply connected family, a role he carried with pride throughout his life. Quintessentially Irish Catholic in spirit and conviction, he lived a life shaped by faith, family, integrity, and deep devotion to the people he loved most. If you had asked him in his youth what gave him the greatest pride, he likely would have said being the youngest of Judge James and Harriet Nangle's remarkable family. He remained closely connected to his siblings throughout his life and was preceded in death by his five brothers and two sisters is survived by Kathleen Nangle, Harriet Rose, Theresa Obermeyer, and Margie Murphy, who were a constant source of love and strength to him.
Steve's years at Saint Louis Priory School were especially meaningful to him. He often reflected on the monks' guidance and the lasting influence it had on his beliefs throughout his life. It gave him great pride to see his grandson graduate from Priory with honors this past June.
After graduating from Priory, Steve attended Saint Louis University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in history, and later earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Denver. He went on to a distinguished legal career spanning five decades. As an attorney, he practiced law with integrity, sound judgment, and genuine care for the people he served, earning both admiration and lasting friendships along the way.
A born storyteller, Steve, had a rare ability to command a room through humor, warmth, and sheer personality. He identified with both Holden Caulfield and Atticus Finch, figures who reflected his wit, independence, and strong sense of right and wrong. Friends and family knew the joy of hearing one of his stories, often filled with vivid memories, childhood antics, and lifelong friendships. Those friendships meant the world to him, and his legacy lives on in the love he gave, the values he carried, the family he cherished, the guidance he offered, and the many lives he touched.
Steve's memory will remain a blessing and a source of strength to all who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Saint Anselm's Church at the Priory on August 29 at 10 am, with a visitation from 8:30 am to 10 am. Burial follows at Calvary Cemetery.
