Steve Murphey

Steven R. Murphey passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at the age of 83. His loving family was with him during his final days.
Steve was born in Oakland, California, on December 3, 1942, to John (Randy) Murphey and Jean Calhoun. He attended San Leandro High School, where he played varsity football. After graduating, he attended Long Beach State for a few years before returning to the Bay Area to marry Alice Usnick in 1963. Together, they shared 63 loving years of marriage.
In his early career, Steve owned and operated several businesses, including a billiard room, pizza parlor, ice cream store, and two nightclubs—most notably Rapid Transit in Santa Cruz during the late 1970's. He later joined Alice in her accounting business, where they worked side by side for many years until retiring.
Steve had a deep passion for sailing. He purchased his first boat, Michelle, an Ericson 32, in the mid-1970s. While Steve loved racing and Alice preferred comfort, they found the perfect balance in their Catalina 38, Sagittarius, which they purchased in 1982. The boat is still sailing out of the Santa Cruz Harbor over 40 years later—a lasting family legacy filled with countless memories. He had a gift for connecting with people, always ready with a story, a laugh, or a warm welcome. Outside of sailing, Steve also enjoyed golfing and traveling, especially to Cabo.
Steve was preceded in death by his sister, Kathy, and his daughter, Michelle.
He is survived by his wife, Alice; his son, Mike; his granddaughter, Halie; and his great-grandson, Milo.
He will be remembered for his warmth, his entrepreneurial spirit, and the many friendships he built throughout his life. His presence, stories, and laughter will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
