The Reverend Steven R. Helmly died from complications of Parkinson’s disease on November 22, 2025, surrounded by loved ones.

Steve was born July 21, 1952, in Savannah, GA, where he lived most of his life. He graduated from Groves High School in 1970 and from Atlanta Christian College in 1975. He was ordained as a minister in 1974.

He was the beloved son of the late Maxine and Jack Helmly. He loved and adored his siblings, Ron (Maria) Helmly and Diane (Robbie) Fairey. He was the devoted husband to Peggy Helmly and the dedicated, loving father to Katie and Victoria Helmly. He was a caring uncle, nephew, cousin, brother-in-law, and friend to so many.

While in college, Steve began serving as a part-time minister to the congregation of Toomsboro Christian Church and served as their full-time minister for four years. While there, he made many lifelong friends. However, Savannah owned Steve’s heart. He returned to the Savannah-area community and began serving in various capacities, including 32 years as the minister at South Gardens Christian Church.

Steve was not only a faithful caregiver to his mom for many years, but he was also a caregiver to his community. He cared for members of his church with frequent check-ins, visits when someone was sick, and companionship. You could often find him sitting in a hospital waiting room, providing transportation to the doctor or grocery shopping for an older church member. One of his favorite parts about being a minister at South Gardens was taking the older women on group trips. When we think of Steve, we think about the care and dedication he gave to the elders in his life.

Steve loved many things. He loved Savannah’s food almost as much as he loved its people. You could often find him enjoying lunch at Barnes or Carey Hilliard’s, two of his favorites. Steve loved discussing state and local politics, watching Braves baseball, UGA football, and the Golden Girls. He loved listening to gospel music and anything by Dolly Parton. He loved the latest cereal and the newest cookie. Another favorite was running into friends at the mall. He loved spending many summers serving at church camp. Best of all, he loved his children.

Steve will be remembered for his compassion, wit, and presence during others' most difficult moments. He will be remembered as a loyal family member and dedicated friend. However, we would be remiss to not mention that Steve will also be remembered for his short temper and legendary eye-rolling skills.

If you are looking for a simple way to honor Steve in your daily life, we suggest getting involved in your local community or church, calling or checking on an older relative or neighbor, and spending time in fellowship with your loved ones over a great meal (and don’t forget dessert, Steve’s favorite!).

Steve lived with Parkinson’s disease for over 25 years. Although he managed his symptoms well early on, ultimately, Parkinson’s stole many years of his life. It took away his independence, his ability to communicate, and his mobility, all of which were exacerbated by dementia. Just as Steve cared for so many people over his lifetime, his family cared for him at home during his final years. This was made possible by the support of dedicated caregivers and family friends.

Because of Steve’s love for Coastal Empire Christian Camp, which he served for over 40 years, we will be holding a service there on April 25th, 2026, at 1:00 pm. Lunch and an informal service of songs and memories will be held.

If you are moved to do so, we request that donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Georgia Chapter, in Steve’s memory (https://www.parkinson.org/georgia).
