Steven Lewis Schwarz, 81, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026. Steve often spoke of how blessed he was and how grateful he felt for the life he lived. He found joy in simple moments - time with family, walks outdoors, making pancakes, coffee with friends, and the companionship of his dogs.
Born July 21, 1944, in Racine, Minnesota, to Mert and Emmie Schwarz, Steve was raised with strong values of hard work and community while working in his family’s general store. He graduated from Stewartville High School in 1962 and proudly served in the United States Marine Corps.
Steve earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics and a master’s in education from Mankato State University and found his calling as a high school math teacher and coach, mentoring countless students with patience, integrity, and care.
He met the love of his life, Jean Schwarz, during college, and together they built a marriage rooted in faith, friendship, and devotion to family.
Steve was a lifelong lover of nature and believed deeply in caring for our collective future. When questioned about planting trees he might not live to see, he said, “Sometimes you don’t plant things for yourself, you plant them for future generations.”
Steve was blessed with many lifelong friendships and was deeply supported by friends from college, the Alexandria, Battle Lake and Stewartville areas, his teaching colleagues, both of their churches, hunting companions, and many others who enriched his life.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Mert and Emmie Schwarz; his brother, Jerry Schwarz; and his son-in-law, Bob Ramier. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean (Cranston) Schwarz; daughters Natalie Ramier (Norm Swett) and Hilary Walters (Bret); grandchildren Sean (Sophie), Alexa, Mackenzie, Ana, and Kade; his sister Carol (Gerry) Leinfelder and Jean’s sister Linda (Doug) Peterson; and many nieces and nephews.
Steve will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, faithful mentor, and cherished friend. His legacy continues in the lives he touched and the values he shared.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 13, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 400 5th Ave NE, Stewartville, MN. A celebration of Steve’s life will follow on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. A light lunch will be served following the service.
The family would like to thank the devoted and loving staff at Cottagewood 4 for making Steve feel loved and comfortable. Memorials preferred to Cottagewood Senior Communities, 4220 55th St NW, Rochester, MN 55901 or the charity of your choice.
