Steven Hugh Walker, age 75, passed away unexpectedly at his home outside Bentonville, IN, on January 22, 2026, following a fall. His wife, Sue Ann, was with him.

Steve was born on September 13, 1950, in the Knightstown, IN, area to Hugh and Helen Bowman-Walker. He grew up on the family farm alongside his older brother, Phil, and was an active member of his high school band. After completing a technical degree in electronics at United Electronics Institute in Louisville, KY, Steve began his career with GTE Corporation (now Verizon Communications) in Richmond, IN.

It was at work that Steve met Carolyn Brenda Scott. They married in 1973 and raised two sons outside New Paris, OH: Montgomery Scott (Heather) Walker of Delaware, OH, and Steven Daniel (Cathy) Walker of Canal Fulton, OH. Steve thoroughly enjoyed—and would happily tell anyone who would listen—stories about his four grandchildren: Ryan & Anna (Monty), and Gus & Hugh (Steve).

Steve was a devoted and loving husband throughout Carolyn's decades of health challenges. He worked third shift for many years so he could take her to doctor appointments during the day and still attend their children's activities.
A longtime member of First Baptist Church of New Paris, Steve also served the community as a volunteer EMT for the Northwest Fire and Ambulance District in New Paris, OH, for many years—his way of giving back to the neighbors who supported his family during Carolyn's illnesses. Steve retired after over 30 years of service from Verizon to care for Carolyn full-time until her passing in January 2006.

God blessed Steve a second time when he met Sue Ann Pflum. They were married in December 2007 and made their home on her family's farm outside Bentonville, IN. Together they traveled extensively in their fifth wheel and shared a life filled with love, adventure, friendship, and family.

Steve was an avid student of American history, particularly the Civil War. He read countless books and visited numerous battlefields and historic sites over the years. A skilled woodworker, he excelled at crafting wooden toys, displaying his creations at craft shows in Richmond, Cambridge City, and Liberty, as well as at Daniel Girls Farmhouse Restaurant in Connersville. Steve also recently served for six years as president of the Fayette County Farm Bureau Association.

To say Steve loved animals would be an understatement. He was known for caring for strays, and more than a few "temporary" guests became permanent members of the family. Steve never met a stranger and always had a story to share—often more than once.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Helen; his brother, Phil; and his first wife, Carolyn.
Services are entrusted to Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City, IN. Friends and family may join Rev. Michael of St. Elizabeth for recitation of the rosary and catholic service at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, January 30, followed by visitation from 4-7 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday, January 31, from 10-11 a.m., with services beginning at 11 a.m. Scott Moistner of Milton Christian Church. Burial will follow at Bentonville Cemetery.
