Stewart William Handy, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and veteran, passed away on December 3, 2025, in Lake City, Florida. He was 80 years old.
Born on May 3, 1945, in Oneonta, New York, Stewart wisas the son of Schuyler and Ella Handy and the oldest of six children. He graduated from Oneonta High School before embarking on a life of service and dedication to his family, faith, and country.
Stewart proudly served in the United States Army for 20 years. During his distinguished military career, he completed three tours in Vietnam. He worked and earned the rank of
E-8. His final assignment was as First Sergeant of the 61st Military Police Company in Fleigerhorst, Germany. He led with unwavering commitment and care for those under his charge. Stewart retired from active duty in 1985 but often reflected on his time in service with pride and gratitude. He was passionate about leading others and frequently expressed that he would gladly do it all over again.
After retirement, Stewart and family settled in Gainesville, Florida where he worked 20 years for the United States Postal Service. He enjoyed fishing, watching and attending Gators games, golfing and as many trips to Disney World with his family as time would permit.
Stewart’s life was deeply rooted in his love for God, his family, and his friends. He shared a remarkable 57-year marriage with his beloved wife, Joan Handy. Together they built a family filled with love and cherished memories. Stewart is survived by Joan; their daughter Kimberly George (Jon); daughter-in-law Tamara Handy; 11 grandchildren; and sisters Paula Bibby (David) and Deborah Handy as well as extended family and friends he cared about like family.
Stew is predeceased in death by his beloved son Donald Stewart Handy; parents Schuyler and Ella Handy; his Uncle and Aunt Donald and Janice Quick; sisters Lillian Palmer and Donna Tryon; and brother Glenn Handy.
Stewart will be remembered as a man of faith who fiercely loved those around him. His legacy of service to both his country and his community will continue to inspire all who knew him. Many will remember Stewart enthusiastically greeting them at the door of the Vineyard Christian Fellowship every Sunday in Gainesville, Florida.
May his memory bring comfort to those who mourn his passing and know he is with his Savior, Jesus Christ. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Grace @ Fort Clarke Church, 9325 West Newberry Rd in Gainesville, Florida.
