Stuart R. Freedman of Westwood, Massachusetts, previously of Newton and Worcester, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, at 85 years of age.
Stu was the loving husband of Joanne Tuck for more than 28 years. A second marriage for both, their relationship was a true love match. "Second to none," he used to say. He also will be dearly missed by Joanne's children, his stepchildren, Stephanie Tuck of New York, NY and Robert Tuck of Jamaica Plain, MA.
Stuart was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on October 10, 1940, to
Joseph Freedman and Jeannette (Snider) Freedman. His siblings were Arthur (Rita) Freedman, Martin (Carol) Freedman, and Renee (Elliott) Harrison. He was also the uncle of Dana and Jayme Harrison, Shayna (Michael) Palermo and Brett (Sherry) Freedman. He is also survived by Ilene Freedman, his first wife.
Stu was a lifelong educator and learner, with a passion for history and politics. After graduating from Clark University with a BA in History, he served in the Army in the Vietnam War and quickly rose to the rank of sergeant. Deciding a military career was not for him, he returned home and earned two master's degrees (History and Psychology) and a Certificate in Special Education from Assumption College in Worcester. He went on to teach high school (AP History, Sociology and Psychology and finally, Special Education) in the Worcester School System, impacting, inspiring and mentoring generations of students. Upon retiring, he enjoyed participating in a Current Events Discussion Group, Tai Chi classes, and was a sought-after teammate for Trivial Pursuit.
With his sharp mind, nothing made him happier than diving into a history book or debating current events - though talking about the Celtics, Red Sox and Patriots came in a close second. Stuart may well have been the world's biggest Bill Russell fan, and he was known to give out Russell's tome on leadership and living a just life, "Russell's Rules", to his favorite people.
Stu's dedication to social justice was his guiding light and matched Joanne's similar interests and passions. In fact, he met Joanne at a Facing History and Ourselves Teacher Training Event and later they served together on the Educational Initiatives Committee of the Sousa Mendes Foundation. Stuart was also active in the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization's campaign to bring universal healthcare to Massachusetts, of which he was very proud.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Stuart's memory may be made to:

He was committed to these causes and would be touched by any gesture of support towards them.
Stu was a special guy. Though the words are often said, we are sure that in his case his memory will indeed be a blessing.
