Dr. Subrata Haldar passed away peacefully on January 30, 2026 in Houston, Texas, at the age of 72, surrounded by his family.

Born in 1953 in Kolkata, India, Dr. Haldar lived a life defined by intellectual curiosity, scientific discovery, and deep devotion to family. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Calcutta and continued his academic path with postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania, where he began his career in molecular biology and cancer research.

As a principal investigator at MetroHealth Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University, Dr. Haldar led a pioneering research laboratory that advanced critical insights into cell signaling and apoptosis within the field of cancer biology. Beyond his scientific contributions, he was a committed mentor whose generosity and encouragement shaped the careers of many emerging scientists. His passion for discovery and commitment to excellence left a lasting impact on the scientific community.

He is remembered as a devoted husband of 43 years to his wife Dr. Aruna Haldar, Ph.D. and a proud father to his son Dr. S. Daniel Haldar, M.D. Dr. Haldar found immense pride in the achievements of his son Daniel, a Harvard graduate who is currently a gastrointestinal medical oncologist and physician-scientist at MD Anderson Cancer Center. In the past two years, his heart was most full when spending time with his ultimate pride and joy - his grandson Ishaan Haldar.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Haldar was an avid soccer and cricket fan. He found deep pleasure in literature, especially in reading and reciting poems of the celebrated Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.

Dr. Haldar is warmly remembered by his brothers Dilip Haldar and Shyamalendu Haldar, and his sister Shukla Bhattacharyya. He carried in memory his father Subodh Kumar Haldar; mother Kamala Haldar; sister Sandhya Goswami; brother Sujit Haldar; sister Shikha Haldar; and sister-in-law Jayati Haldar.

Dr. Subrata Haldar's legacy lives on through the brilliance of his scientific contributions and the love he shared with those closest to him. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him. Services to celebrate his life will be held privately.
