In Loving Memory of Susan Conley
August 13, 1955 - March 26, 2026
BRATTLEBORO, VT — Susan Conley, a woman of fierce strength and a tireless protector of others, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026, at the age of 70.
Born in Brockton, MA, to the late Charles and JoAnn Conley, Susan carried a sparked resilience through her entire life. She was someone who chose the path less traveled, often welcoming last-minute adventures and building deep, lasting bonds with everyone she met.
A Life of Compassion and Service
Susan's career centered on her devotion to people. In her early years as a social worker, she focused on helping families in need. Her impact grew even deeper in the community through her role as the Prevention Program Manager for the AIDS Project of Southern Vermont.
Susan built her program from the ground up. Her approach to care was so effective that others looked to her work as a model to follow. By leading the prevention program and through her direct outreach, she became a lifeline for people facing substance use. Susan offered more than just help; she offered dignity. She could talk to anyone, and her firm, kind guidance changed many lives. In Brattleboro, she was a cornerstone of the community, held in high regard by her peers and those she served.
The Queen of Ireland
A true daughter of Ireland, Susan's soul belonged to the Emerald Isle. She traveled to see her Irish family every year, keeping a bond alive across the ocean. She shared a special closeness with her late cousin, Josie. This past summer, she was moved when Josie's husband, children, and grandchild traveled from Ireland to visit her during her treatment—a final act of the deep love they shared.
Her heritage came alive through Irish Step Dancing, a joy she carried from her youth well into adulthood. Whether she was dancing with her Celtic Heels crew or seeking out a new horizon, Susan lived with a bright zest. She loved to laugh, and her presence could warm any room.
Family and Friendship
Susan held a rare place in the hearts of her family and friends. People simply loved being around her. She maintained a friendship that lasted sixty years with her best friend, Charlene Swan. Above all else, she took pride in her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Bridget Rounds, and son-in-law, John Rounds; and her grandson, Jackson Rounds, who will always cherish his "Sasa." She also leaves behind her stepdaughter, Erica Hotaling, and grandchildren Jacob and Annalyse Cota.
Susan is survived by her siblings: John Conley and his wife Patricia; Bill Conley and his wife Christie; JoAnn Conley; and Charles Conley and his partner Lucia, along with many dear nieces and nephews.
Susan was a force—the strongest woman many will ever know. She loved adventure, she loved Ireland, and she loved people. While her shoes are impossible to fill, the memory of her warmth will stay with everyone she held dear.
