Susan Payne English was born and raised in Salem, Virginia, where she developed a lifelong love for the Shenandoah Valley, she would always call home. Some of her happiest memories were made in High Point, North Carolina, surrounded by her many Weavil and Payne aunts, uncles, and cousins, whose laughter, steadfast loyalty, and enduring bonds helped shape her joyful and spirited nature.

As a young girl, Susan was both an adventurous Girl Scout and proud cheerleader — and in many ways, she never stopped being either. She was always ready to show up, always encouraging, always cheering for the people she loved. She attended Guilford College as a business major, but it was the college’s Quaker values — simplicity, integrity, community, and peace — that took deepest root in her heart.

Susan built a career in furniture and design in High Point, where her work reflected her natural gifts. She possessed a keen eye for design and an instinct for creating spaces that felt warm and welcoming. Her own home reflected her kind spirit — always open and inviting.

Grounded in her Methodist upbringing and strengthened by her Quaker faith, Susan lived her beliefs through quiet kindness, hospitality, and an open heart. She had a gift for making people feel seen, valued, and at ease. Her warmth and generosity left a lasting impression on all who she met. A devoted dog lover, she extended that same warmth and affection to every four-legged friend she encountered.

She was the cherished daughter of Margaret Weavil Payne and T. Stuart Payne. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents. Susan is survived by her son, Jim English and his wife Lori of Lake Tillery, NC; her daughter, Stuart English Watson and her husband Chip of Atlanta, GA; and her treasured grandchildren, Weber English, Caroline Watson, and Sarah Mac Watson, who were among her greatest joys.

Susan’s life was filled with love — for family, for friends, for home, and for the simple beauties that make life meaningful. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated staff of Woodhaven Court and the compassionate hospice caregivers of Tillery Compassionate Care in Albemarle, North Carolina, for their steadfast support, kindness, and attentive care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, in the chapel of Wesley Memorial Methodist Church, 1225 Chestnut Drive, High Point, North Carolina. The family will receive friends in the Asbury Room immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tillery Compassionate Care by visiting https://tillerycompassionatecare.org/donate-now/ or by mailing a gift to 960 North First Street, Albemarle, NC 28001.
