Susan Henderson

1931 - 2026

Susan Cooper Henderson (née Curtice), aged 94, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, in Baltimore, Maryland. Born on October 28, 1931, in Washington, D.C., Susan lived a rich and fulfilling life that left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Raised on Century Oak Farm in Fairfax County, Virginia, Susan’s early years were defined by life on a working farm. She loved animals, especially her cherished dog, Piffle, and her horse, Chum. Cats also held a special place in her heart, and she always shared her home with at least one feline companion.

Although Susan enjoyed all genres of music, she had a particular passion for bluegrass and country music. Her love of bluegrass led her on countless adventures along the East Coast as she followed her favorite bands and built enduring friendships with both fellow fans and musicians. "Stained Glass Bluegrass" on Sunday mornings came to be Susan's favorite form of worship.

Susan belonged to Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax City. The Reverend Raymond Davis was very special to her, and he christened and confirmed her children.

At family gatherings, Susan’s potato salad and home-baked cakes were requested by all. Her vibrancy and concern for others left those around her with cherished memories of laughter and warmth.

Susan is survived by her sister, Barbara C. Noll; daughter Amelia M. Ditch (Michael); sons James M. Henderson (Mary) and Frederick J. Henderson (Rebecca); grandchildren Susanna L. Kitchen, Jon P. Kitchen, Kathryn Pritchett, Glen Fry, Carl Fry, and Stephanie Fry; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Susan was predeceased by her parents, Frederick Hosea Curtice and Cuba Grayson Curtice; her brothers, Frederick Hosea Curtice Jr. and and Cooper Grayson Curtice; and her sister, Anna D. Morrisey. She is certainly enjoying being reunited with them, as well as with her beloved aunts and uncles from both sides of the family.

A Memorial Mass will be held on April 16, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Elizabeth's Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, 3320 Benson Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland. A graveside service and wake will be held in Fairfax, Virginia, at a later date. May all who loved her, and miss her earthly presence, be comforted by knowing she is now whole and healthy in both body and spirit, and shining her love down on us all.
