Susan (Scher) Karetsos
(1949-2026)
Susan (Scher) Karetsos, 76, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 21, 2026, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. She will be laid to rest at Mt. Eden Cemetery, immediately next to her beloved father and protector, Wilfred Scher, and caring mother, Tillie Scher.
A Life of Resilience and Spirit:
Born in the Bronx on May 9, 1949, Susan moved to Yonkers, NY, as a young girl, growing up in the home her grandfather built for their family. A graduate of Lincoln High School, she went on to earn a degree in education from Monmouth University in New Jersey.
After college, Susan met Evangelos Karetsos in NYC and they married soon thereafter. In 1974, they welcomed their first and only child, Spyro, born in Teaneck, NJ.
Throughout her life, Susan was defined by her independence and a wandering spirit. She lived for many years in Dover Plains and Pawling, NY, as well as Vero Beach, FL. A woman who found joy in the simple freedom of the open road, Susan drove a taxi for many years and cherished her travels to Maine and California with her partner. Those who knew her will fondly remember her love for music, singing, dancing, and her lifelong affinity for sweet treats and Chinese takeout.
Faith and Family:
Though she faced lifelong challenges associated with mental illness, Susan persevered with profound faith and spirituality. Her resilience was matched only by the deep, unwavering love she held for her son, Spyro. Even in moments of disagreement, her gentle nature always sought reconciliation and peace.
In her later years, as her needs changed, Susan moved to Green Briar Home in Millbrook, NY, and eventually to Riverton Home in Allentown, PA. During this time, she was supported by the devoted care of her son and daughter-in-law, Laura. Her final days were filled with comfort and connection; she shared a last conversation with her siblings and left her family with the beautiful, parting words: "I am so happy. I am so happy."
Family and Legacy:
Susan was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Tillie Scher. She is survived by her devoted son, Spyro Karetsos, and his wife, Laura; her cherished grandsons, Evan, Niko, and Alex Karetsos (who knew her affectionately as "Grammy Suzzie"); her brother, Herbert Scher and family; and her sister, Marilyn Schweiloch and family. She also leaves behind the extended Otten family of Carlisle, PA, and the Karetsos family of Athens, Greece.
