Susan Rae Olsen

1947 - 2026

Susan Rae Olsen, 79, of Rancho Santa Fe, California, passed away on April 4, 2026, following a stroke while visiting friends and family in Tacoma, Washington.

Born in Pasadena, California to Frank and Dorothy Showalter, Susie grew up in Burlingame before moving to Tehran, Iran, where her father worked for Standard Oil. Living abroad at a young age sparked a lifelong sense of curiosity and a deep love for travel that shaped the rest of her life.

At 21-years old, Susie became a stewardess for American Airlines, a role she cherished and often spoke fondly of throughout her life. It was during these early years that her love of people, connection, and exploration truly took flight.

She met the love of her life, Paul “Denny” Olsen, on a ski trip in Lake Tahoe. They married on September 21, 1969, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love, laughter, and shared adventure. Together, they built a beautiful life, living in Mill Valley, St. Louis, and ultimately settling in Rancho Santa Fe while keeping a second home in Park City, Utah. Side by side, they traveled the world, creating memories and stories that would last a lifetime.

All through her life Susie was beautiful, but her real beauty was within. She always put others first. Susie was known for her joy, positivity and generous heart. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and valued, bringing warmth wherever she went. Susie volunteered at Scripps Cancer Center and worked at their child care center. She cared as deeply for others as she did for her family.

Social by nature, she loved gathering with friends, celebrating life, and never missed an opportunity for a good party. Her youthful outlook, positivity, and zest for life were truly infectious. She prioritized her health and loved working out and staying active. Among her many travels, Hawaii and Europe were always her favorites.

Above all, Susie was devoted to her family. She was a loving wife, a proud mother of three, grandmother of six, and great-grandmother of two.

She is survived by her husband, Denny, her sister Diane and her children & grandchildren.

An event to honor Susie’s life will be announced by the family at a later date.

Rather than flowers or cards, she would have a simple task for each of you: Hold your spouse or loved one for at least 30 seconds and tell them what they have meant to you.
