Suzanne Warfield Johnson passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026 surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on March 22, 1941, in Washington, D.C. to Elizabeth and Courtland Lee Warfield, Sr., Suzanne grew up in nearby Alexandria, Virginia, a place she cherished deeply throughout her life. Alexandria was not just her hometown, it was the backdrop of a life richly lived, filled with friendships, tennis matches, neighborhood gatherings, and countless celebrations.
She graduated from St. Agnes School in 1959, and she met the love of her life, Philip Ronald Johnson, who attended St. Stephens School. Their marriage was one of enduring love and mutual admiration until Phil’s passing in July 2023. She also shared a deeply cherished bond with her older brother, Courtland Lee Warfield, Jr. of Richmond, VA, who passed away last year.
She is survived by her two children, Thomas Hayward Johnson (Julie) and Elizabeth Johnson Duncan (Lad); her four beautiful granddaughters, Emily Bailey (James), Hannah Johnson, Frances Duncan, and Lucy Duncan; and two wonderful great-grandsons, Hart and Cole Bailey. To her granddaughters, she was proudly known as the “Queen of the Fairies” — a title she gave herself with delight. She wove magic into their imaginations and created a world of wonder they will forever carry in their hearts.
Few things meant more to her than her friends and were a constant source of strength, laughter, and joy. An avid tennis player and enthusiastic competitor, she organized regular ping pong tournaments and was truly the “hostess with the mostess.” She never missed a party — large or small — much to her husband’s affectionate chagrin. She was also a longtime member of The Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Junior League, and the Garden Club of Virginia.
In their later years, Suzanne and Phil moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where they became an integral part of their daughter’s family life, cherishing time with grandchildren. She spent her final years at The Sharon, a continuing care retirement community, supported by an extraordinary team of compassionate caregivers whose kindness and devotion brought comfort and dignity to her days.
