Svein Bjorkly

1948 - 2025

Svein Kristian Bjorkly passed away on November 13, 2025, in Roscommon, Michigan, at the age of 77. Born on May 20, 1948, in Midsund, Norway, Svein lived a life marked by intellectual rigor, global achievement, and a deep commitment to both family and community.

From an early age, Svein demonstrated a keen intellect and a drive for excellence. At just 17 years old, he completed two years of National Service in Norway—a formative experience that instilled in him discipline and resilience. His academic journey led him to Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Finishing fourth in a class of seventy students and graduating with Second Class Honours, Svein specialized in Digital Control—an area that would define much of his professional career.

Svein's engineering expertise took him around the world. He was awarded contracts in Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, Canada, and Japan. His work was not only technically advanced but also widely respected. One of the proudest moments of his career came after completing a contract for fin stabilizers in England; his team was invited to the royal castle where Queen Elizabeth II personally shook his hand—a gesture that remained one of Svein's most cherished memories.

After spending two decades in Scotland, Svein moved to Troy, Michigan in 1985. There he continued his professional pursuits while building a life rooted in purpose and generosity. In 2022, he retired to Higgins Lake—a place he deeply loved and continually improved through his hands-on projects and thoughtful enhancements.

Svein was known for his boundless energy and meticulous nature. Whether it was cross-country skiing through snowy trails or tackling home construction projects with precision and care, he approached every endeavor with enthusiasm. He also enjoyed downhill skiing, golf, gardening, and above all else—cooking and entertaining. Guests at Svein's table were never without a full glass or engaging conversation; hospitality was one of his many gifts.

A fact-based thinker who valued reason and knowledge above all else, Svein approached life as an atheist. He was well-read and intellectually curious—always seeking to understand how things worked and how they could be improved. This mindset extended beyond machines and systems; Svein was always looking for ways to help others or fix anything that wasn't working properly.

Svein is lovingly remembered by his wife Deborah; sons Alex (Patrick) and James from his life in Scotland; stepsons Harry (Jenny), Andrew (Courtney), and Jay whom he shared with Deborah; grandchildren Madeleine, James, Wesley, John, Joslyn, and Lilly; sister Else Karin; brother Haavard; sister Elin (Finn); as well as many others whose lives were touched by his kindness and ingenuity.

He was preceded in death by his father Halvar and mother Emilie.

Svein's legacy is one of brilliance paired with humility—a man who traveled the world solving complex problems yet found equal joy in planting a garden or sharing a meal with loved ones. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
