Sylvia Savannah Jones was born on September 20, 1936, in Harlem, New York, to the late Savannah
Jones and William Jones Sr. She was one of six children and shared a close bond with her siblings: her
brother, William Jones Jr., and her four sisters, Ruth Jenkins, Ernestine Taylor, Lucille Jones, and Juanita Hutson.
Sylvia was the last surviving sibling and the final one of her family to transition to glory.
Sylvia was a longtime and devoted member of Kelly Temple Church of God in Christ in Harlem, New
York, where she faithfully served under the leadership of Bishop O.M. Kelly for many years.
On December 28, 1957, Sylvia married the love of her life, Dudley E. Grierson Sr., at Kelly Temple
Church. Their marriage lasted more than six decades before Dudley preceded her in death in October
2021. Together they shared many cherished moments, including their favorite pastime—watching
game shows and enthusiastically yelling answers at the television as if they were contestants.
Sylvia loved entertaining family and friends in her home. She was known for her delicious cooking,
especially her macaroni and cheese, the family's secret recipe potato salad, her famous sweet tea, her beloved German chocolate , cream cheese pound cakes , and 7 layer cookies, just to name a few.
She enjoyed traveling, taking cruises, road trips, and shopping. One of her favorite hobbies was
collecting Lladro figurines from Fortunoff and other specialty stores. Her husband often reminded her,
"If you want something, you only live once—go get it."
Sylvia worked for more than 25 years as a communications telephone operator at the Old Courthouse
in Mineola, New York, where she built lasting friendships and took pride in her work.
Above all else, Sylvia treasured her family. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and
would do anything for those she loved.
Sylvia peacefully departed this life on March 6, 2026, at 12:11 a.m., with her loving daughter Tracey by
her side as she took her final breath.
She leaves to cherish her precious memory: her son Dudley Grierson Jr. and wife Sheila Grierson; her
daughter Tracey Moore and husband Richard Moore Sr.; and her brother-in-law Charles Hutson Sr.
Grandchildren: Melissa, Richard C. Moore Jr., Ashley, and Cherie.
Great-grandchildren: Riley, Grace, Emma, Kayleigh, Richard Amire, and Autumn.
Niece: Dr. Sharon Taylor Holliman.
Nephews: Julius "JC" Taylor, Elder Charles Hutson Jr., Michael C. Hutson, and Todd A. Hutson, and Predeceased nephew Steven L. Hutson
host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.
