Sylvia Ann Smoyer was born to Judson William and Pearl Wilhelmina (nee Coester) in Chanute, KS, December 2nd. Six months later, the family relocated permanently to Lawrence, KS where many of her earliest and fondest memories were made.
Graduating Lawrence High School class of 1958, she continued her education at Santa Barbara City College in California. Her subsequent New York City move led her to new pursuits both as a model and as a museum cicerone. On returning to Lawrence, she graduated from the University of Kansas with a BA in Education. She also met her future husband, Bill, to whom she wed on August 21, 1964. Moving to the Kansas City Metropolitan area where she taught, the couple became decades-long residents of Overland Park, Kansas.
Her greatest desire was motherhood, which she achieved in June of 1974, and many times remarked that those were the happiest years of her life. Another precious child was born in July of 1980.
By choice, she returned to the workforce as an administrative assistant at Mercedes Benz in Corporate Woods. Not enough, she continued her adult education leading to her favorite (and most celebrated) position as Miss Sylvia, the Children's Librarian at Oak Park Library. She became a beloved institution and storyteller, being featured in the local newspaper.
Retiring to Arizona in 2004, she built several homes, living in the state for 20+ years. Ultimately, she returned to her native KC where she gardened and spent precious time with her friends and family, continuing to be an avid, vocal Chiefs fan.
Sylvia passed away peacefully in her son's home on October 21st surrounded by her loved ones, in her sleep. Predeceased by her parents, she is survived by her husband of 61-years, Bill, her son, John William (Zackary) of Kansas City, MO, and a daughter, Anne Glosenger of Lenexa. Her quick wit, fast laughter, and magnetic personality, endeared her to so many. Her love of the arts, children, and of life will continue in her legacy.
A celebration of life is to follow.
