Terry Mohn

Dr. Terry Mohn, a devoted educator, accomplished musician, and beloved family member, passed away on January 29, 2026, in Wesley Chapel, Florida. He was 79 years old.

Born on April 30, 1946, in Peoria, Illinois, Terry's lifelong passion for music began early and led him to achieve a doctorate in Music Theory and Composition from the University of Illinois. His academic journey laid the foundation for a distinguished career that would leave an indelible mark on generations of students and colleagues.

Terry dedicated over three decades to the University of Tampa, where he served as a faculty member and led the music department through a period of remarkable growth and success. His leadership and commitment to excellence were recognized with the Louise Loy Hunter Award—the university's highest honor bestowed upon faculty—celebrating his outstanding contributions and service.

A gifted mentor, Terry took great pride in guiding his students beyond the classroom. Many went on to build successful careers in music and education, maintaining close ties with him long after graduation. He remained a steadfast supporter of their aspirations, offering encouragement and wisdom whenever called upon.

Beyond academia, Terry was an accomplished performer. He played saxophone and clarinet professionally as a member of the Bay Area Saxophone Quartet, numerous jazz ensembles, bands, and orchestras. His musical talents brought joy to audiences across many venues and reflected his deep love for performance.

Terry also served his country as a member of the U.S. Army's 5th Army Band—a role that combined his patriotism with his musical gifts.

His interests extended well beyond music. A lifelong tennis enthusiast, Terry earned a college scholarship through his athletic abilities and relished Florida's year-round playing conditions. He was also known among friends and family as an avid Apple enthusiast, affectionately referred to as a "geek" by those who turned to him for tech advice.

Travel was another passion that shaped Terry's life. Inspired by childhood summer trips across the country with his uncle and brother, he developed an enduring love for exploration. Cruising became one of his favorite ways to see the world; over time he visited 36 countries alongside family and friends.

Terry is survived by his loving wife Karen; daughter Melissa Johnson, sister Becky Mohn Brinker; brother-in-law Gary; sister-in-law Vicki Kirkland; niece Shelley; nephew Sean; and extended families who cherished him deeply. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard Mohn and parents Charles and Dorothy Mohn.

Family and friends remember Terry as kind-spirited, generous, fun-loving—qualities that shone through in every aspect of his life. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father and grandparent. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched as a teacher, musician, mentor, relative, and friend.
