Thomas William Dyke, Jr., a.k.a. Tom Van Dyke, finished his life song on November 25, 2025, and has now joined the heavenly chorus. He was 69.
Born September 24, 1956, in Philadelphia, PA, Tom grew up in Levittown, PA, displaying unusually high intelligence from an early age. He moved to Miami, FL, at age sixteen to attend Biscayne College (now St. Thomas University), on full academic scholarship. There, he was destined to meet his best friend and wife, actor Barbara “Bobbie” Keegan, in a "cute" meet right out of a rom-com, while both were performing in a musical production. At the time of his passing, the two were long-time residents of the Los Angeles area and had shared the best of life for nearly fifty years. Tom is also survived by his sisters Janice Van Dyck and Maryellen (Mark) Vettori, four nieces and nephews, their children, and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas W. Dyke, Sr., and Marie O’Neill Dyke, and by his younger brother, Matthew.
Blessed with perfect pitch, Tom gravitated to music at a young age. Over the years, he taught himself and mastered piano, acoustic and electric guitar, bass and many other instruments. A prolific songwriter with a strong baritenor voice, he was a composer and lyricist, recording numerous albums of original music. After moving to Los Angeles with his wife, he was a music producer and co-owner of Firehouse Studios, a working recording studio as well as popular shooting location for iconic screen titles such as "Ghostbusters", "Alien Nation", and many others. Excelling as a recording artist, Tom was equally passionate about live performance. He was leader and frontman for bands including Miami legends The Cookies, Los Angeles bands The Naked Apes, Wire Jungle, This Side Up, Big Happy, Deep Sky Project, and most recently The Van Dyke Bros Band. His early passion for acting culminated in his most recent long-running performance opposite his real-life wife in the musical, “You Haven’t Changed a Bit and Other Lies” at the Santa Monica Playhouse.
A true Renaissance Man, Tom’s other professional careers spanned the gamut from optician to legal search consultant. A chance encounter at a Los Angeles sports field led to his touring England as a cricket player. His great intellectual capacity led him to testing his wits and knowledge on the game show circuit. He was a successful contestant on Jeopardy!, was proudly one of the few to Win Ben Stein's Money, and claimed the title of highest all-time winner on The Joker’s Wild. In later years, his intellectual pursuits took him down the winding path of philosophy, the Founding Fathers, Catholicism, and theology, with a special dedication to the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas. Regarded by online followers as an internet Catholic influencer, Tom enjoyed community discussion on the Catholic faith. He was always available for a spirited debate. Other pleasurable pursuits included Phillies baseball, 76ers and Clippers basketball, humor, cooking, enjoying ethnic foods, and making anyone who met him feel truly valued. Put in a good word for us, T. We'll all sing together.
Tom, in his own words:
"Philly Boy. Thomist. Husband. Musician. Eclecticist. Bon vivant. Life is good."
