Thomas Geoffrey “Geoff” Hale (May 3, 1946-March 8, 2026) of Miami, Florida, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer. A gifted musician and devoted family man, Geoff will be remembered for his distinguished career as a bassoonist, his deep love for family and friends, and the many lives he touched through his kindness and joyful spirit.
Geoff was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1946 and was lovingly raised by his adoptive parents, Edwin and Leona Hale. He later made Miami his home and attended the University of Miami School of Music (B.M. ’69, M.M. ’70), where he refined the talent that would shape his lifelong career.
A distinguished bassoonist, Geoff performed with numerous respected ensembles throughout his career, including the United States Marine Band, “The President’s Own.” He served as principal bassoon of the Miami Symphony (MISO) and the Miami City Ballet Orchestra, and also performed with the Florida Philharmonic, Florida Grand Opera Orchestra, South Florida Symphony, Florida Chamber Orchestra, Miami Philharmonic, Miami Beach Symphony, and Orchestra Miami. As an educator, he taught bassoon for more than 50 years, both privately and at the New World School of the Arts in Miami.
In 1965, Geoff met the love of his life, Lois Annette. They married in 1968 and shared nearly 60 wonderful years together. He was a devoted husband and proud father to Adam Hale, Oliver Hale, and Melissa Hale (Anibal), and a loving grandfather to Nicolas and Sebastian, who brought him great joy. He is also survived by his siblings, Peter Hale (Judy) and Susan Spooner, along with many nieces and nephews.
Geoff enjoyed spending time with family and friends, watching football, and woodworking. Known for his quick wit and gift for storytelling, he had a natural way of putting others at ease and making them feel valued. Generous with his time, energy, and support, Geoff was always ready to help tackle a practical problem. He came alive when there was something to figure out, approaching it with determination and real enthusiasm.
Geoff will be deeply missed by his family, friends, fellow musicians, and students. A celebration of his life will be held at Edson Chapel at Plymouth Congregational Church, 3400 Devon Road Coconut Grove on May 14th, 2026 11:00 AM. The family welcomes your presence, thoughts, stories, and prayers; flowers and gifts are not necessary.
