Thomas Michael “Tom” McClure, also known in recent years as Karen McClure, age 74, passed away on February 19, 2026, at the Veterans Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin.
Born on June 30, 1951, Tom was the son of Geneva Helen (Brown) McClure and Virgil Floyd McClure. He grew up on Spring Street and Fox Avenue in Madison and graduated from Madison Memorial High School in 1970.
He later served in the United States Army, for which he was very proud. He worked for American Family Insurance and retired by 2007. In 2007 he ran for the Madison Common Council to represent District 10. As a resident of Allied Drive, he wanted to promote good housing and more jobs for the people who lived there.
He was known among friends for his gentle humor, curiosity, and affection for animals. He loved his dogs and cats - most recently his cat Sonny and especially his former cat, Marcus – as well as gerbils and a mystery aquarium creature he called Henry. He had a near photographic memory of locations of long-gone businesses in Madison.
He is preceded in death by his parents and many aunts and uncles.
A celebration of life will be announced later. Memorial donations may be made to Citizens’ Climate Lobby.
