Thomas Elbert McDowell, known to many as Tom, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 12, 2026, at the age of 83. He died at his and his late wife's home in Geyserville, California, after a courageous two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer.

Born on June 17, 1942, in Healdsburg, California, Tom was the son of Archie and Edna McDowell. From an early age, he embodied the values that would define his life—resilience, humor, and an unwavering work ethic. Tom helped shape the McDowell name into one associated with hard work, warmth, and enjoying life.

After graduating from Healdsburg High School, Tom married Gail Louise three years later. At the start of their life together, Tom juggled an astonishing seventeen part-time jobs—a testament to his tireless dedication and drive. He soon found his calling in viticulture, working full-time as vineyard manager for Windsor Vineyards, which later became Rodney Strong Vineyards. Eventually, he founded McDowell Vineyard Management, where he cultivated grapes and raised cattle with pride and purpose.

Together, Tom and Gail raised four children and were deeply rooted in their community. They were active participants in Healdsburg 4-H and the Healdsburg High School Boosters Club. Summers were marked by cherished adventures to the Wagy family cabin at Wrights Lake—a tradition that continues today with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Tom had a zest for life that was as unique as it was endearing. He loved gardening—often with a disregard for clothing—cows, cribbage, card games, and spontaneous adventures. But above all else, he loved people. His kindness was matched only by his humility; despite building a life of remarkable accomplishment from the ground up, Tom remained grounded and generous in spirit.

He was patient and self-assured—a steady presence for those around him—and he offered unwavering support to those he loved. His life stands as a shining example of what it means to work hard, build something lasting, and share it freely with others.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife Gail; his eldest son Patrick; his sister May; brother Willie; brother-in-law Vernon; and his nieces, Joanna and Megan Farrell.

He is survived by his children Mark Thomas (Greta), David Earl, and Genevieve Margaret; grandchildren Tyler Thomas, Zachary William (Kate), and Courtney Marie McDowell Allen (Jason); great-grandchildren Oliver Thomas and Theodore James; siblings Doris Evans, Sarah Henderson, June Dericco, Patrick McDowell (Diane), and Richard McDowell (Liz); brother-in-law Bob Farrell; as well as dozens of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will carry forward his legacy of love and laughter.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, March 7th at 1:00 p.m. at the Geyserville Oriental Community Hall located at 1000 CA-128, Geyserville, CA 95441. In accordance with Tom's wishes—and true to his spirit—casual attire is encouraged. Sweatpants are welcomed. Clothing is required.

Per Tom's request, this gathering will also honor the memory of his late wife Gail.
