Trey Evan Duffy, 1985 - 2021, passed away five years ago on February 25th. His family pays tribute here to his memory.
"Where you used to be, there is a hole in the world, which I find myself constantly walking around in the daytime, and falling in at night," Edna St. Vincent Millay.
What is the measure of a man? Is it in the good will, the kind gestures, and generous offerings he has shared throughout his life? Is it is in the family and friends who have loved him, the lives he has touched, the children he has cradled and lifted aloft, the ideas he has generated and expanded, the physical feats he dared in his youth?
"Trey was the most loving and kind person I've ever met. His mission in life was to make other people happy and feel good. He always took care of everyone else," says his wife Tess, "He would bring bags of McDonald's to the homeless, spending time, too, to hang out and talk."
Some of his generosity was discovered after he passed, as his secret donations to worthy causes come to light. Mention your failing computer, and a new one would find its way to your door, "Oh, a 'friend' had an extra," he'd claim. Have a medical crises and he'd be at your door to drive you to the doctor.
His Aunt Marilyn Frisby remembers, "He was sweet and kind and gentle and considerate," and his Aunt Suzanne LoBue says, "He was wonderful to be with all the time, he was always happy." His Aunt Kerry Moberly-Pratt remembered his sudden, deep, goofy laugh and that, "He wasn't afraid to say, 'I love you,' and you knew he meant it."
He was a breathtaking daredevil in his youth. People stood in wonder, watching him do a back flip off a cliff-side or juggle fire batons high in the sky. "He was just remarkably physically gifted, but humble about it," said his Uncle John Moberly. His Aunt Phyllis Moberly remembers, "We once watched him do a spontaneous percussion solo using every pot, pan, utensil and surface in the kitchen when he was nine years old, it was stunning, he'd never had a drum lesson."
Trey's wild side was tempered by an innocence of spirit. His lightning quick mind loved a good-natured debate and his warm heart appreciated the wonders of Disneyland. And oh, how he loved his babies. A natural born father, his children were always on his shoulder or in his arms. He understood the value of love.
His father Trey Duffy, Sr., remembers his son as, "A self-made man, inspired by his babies' grasp of language, with the heart of a humanitarian and the mind of an engineer, a defender of peace and justice, a wounded soul, an extraterrestrial with a chivalrous creed and code, a child at heart, a loving son, brother, husband and father."
"The world is a better place because he lived in it," says Tess.
Trey, also known as Evan, grew up in Felton, CA, and in Madison, WI. As an adult, he lived for some years in Venice, CA, and Redondo Beach. His work in the tech industry included co-founding Flightless Nerds and Agency for Professional Esports, as well as chief technical officer positions with Sabertooth Media, Shnaap, Level27 and West Coast Cure.
He is survived by his wife Tess Yunk Duffy, his children Finneas Duffy and Ada Duffy, his mother Sarah Moberly Duffy, father Trey Duffy, Sr., stepmother Kitch Barnicle and his brother Sean Duffy.
