Tyler Jacob van der Stappen passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
He was born on December 9, 1984, to Wilbert and Gaylene van der Stappen. Although his parents later divorced, they remained devoted to ensuring Tyler experienced a loving childhood with both of them.
Tyler embraced a slower pace of life, taking time to truly appreciate the world around him. He found peace in nature, especially in the mountains, where he developed a deep knowledge of plant life and survival skills. He had a passion for collecting and restoring Volkswagen buses, often using them to travel to remote camping destinations. Tyler also loved to explore the world, taking extended trips to fully immerse himself in new cultures and environments. California was always a favorite place to visit.
A gifted artist, Tyler expressed himself through both visual art and music. His sculptures, along with his love for drums and guitar, brought joy to those around him. He had a natural ability to connect with people—he made others laugh easily and listened with genuine care, always making people feel seen and valued.
Tyler was kind, gentle, intelligent, and patient, with an incredibly big heart. He was the fun uncle—the first to sit at the kids' table, meeting them at their level and filling the room with laughter. He also gave the very best hugs.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wil, who was also his best friend. One can only imagine the joy of their reunion. Tyler is survived by his mother, Gaylene Opheikens; his siblings, Bart, Mjika, Rikki, Chris, and Austin; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, all of whom love and cherish him deeply.
A celebration of Tyler's life will be held for family.
