Early on the morning of January 5, 2026, Ursula (Schmengler) Ahmed peacefully passed away near her family in the Huntsville, Alabama area.

Ursula was born to the late Friedrich Schmengler and late Friedel Schmengler on July 7, 1937 in the area of Dusseldorf, Germany. A talented linguist, she mastered English and Spanish along with her native language, German, while studying in a university in southern Germany, where her family moved after the end of World War 2. In 1963, she immigrated to the United States and married her husband of 36 years, Shaffiq Ahmed, who preceded her in death. They lived in Youngstown, Ohio for many years and she taught college level German for several years at Youngstown State University. Many years later, she and Shaffiq moved to Alabama. Ursula also studied psychology and received a Masters degree in that field. After that, she worked as a counselor for a crisis help hotline, both in Ohio and in Alabama.

Ursula was very fond of traveling. She visited many parts of the world throughout her life, including Spain, France, Germany, Czech Republic, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, Canada, and India. In addition, she loved traveling and visiting many parts of the US, including New York City, Washington DC, Atlanta, New Orleans, Florida, the Gulf Coast, New Mexico, California, and other places too numerous to mention.

Beloved wife, mother, mother-in-law, and sister, Ursula is survived by her son, Rafiq (Christine) Ahmed and her grandchildren: Katy Ahmed, Noah Ahmed, and Victor Ahmed. She is also survived by two brothers and one sister: Knut (Marie) Schmengler of Pirmasens, Germany and their children (Diemut Grunhagen, Dagmar Schmengler, Cordula Schmidt and Uta Schmengler); Eckhard (Ingeborg) Schmengler of Munich, Germany and their children (Caroline Schmengler and Martin Schmengler); and Monika (Frieder) Schlupp of Konstanz, Germany and their children (Meike Heinz and Veronika Heinz). She is also survived by many grandnieces and grandnephews who are too numerous to mention!
Ursula’s family is grateful to her for serving so well as a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother (Nana), sister and friend. She lives on in their memories.

After a private ceremony with her family, Ursula was interred at Huntsville Memorial Gardens in Huntsville, Alabama. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Huntsville Botanical Gardens.
