Velma Ree Hicks, a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished sister, and beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully in January 2026 in Merrillville, Indiana. She was born in Canton, Mississippi to Maggie Francis and Willie Fisher and was the second eldest of her mother's nine children. From an early age, Velma demonstrated a quiet strength, deep compassion, and an unwavering commitment to family that would define her life.
Affectionately known to all who loved her as Ree, Velma spent her formative years in Mississippi, where she attended high school and built lifelong bonds rooted in faith, family, and community. It was during her young adult years that she met the love of her life, Herman Hicks. Their union blossomed into a lasting marriage, and together they built a life grounded in love, partnership, and shared purpose.
After settling in Indiana, Velma devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family as a homemaker. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, and welcome—beautifully decorated and filled with laughter, love, and the sounds of family gatherings. She had a special joy for decorating, never missing an opportunity to make a space feel inviting, and she also delighted in playing bingo, a pastime that brought her happiness and camaraderie.
Though Indiana became home, Velma never lost her deep connection to the South. She cherished traveling back to Mississippi to visit family, rekindle memories, and remain close to her roots. Family meant everything to her, and she poured her heart into nurturing relationships across generations.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Herman; and her siblings Margie, Ruth, and Linda Fay.
She leaves to forever cherish her memory her children: Sandra, Curtis, Angela, Lesaunia (Jamie), and Herman, Jr. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Taurie, Marquis, Devonte, Trent, Shamyra, and Donald, and she also leaves behind beloved great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy. Velma is also survived by her siblings Charles, Larry, Ricky, Loisteen, and Kathy, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends—all of whom adored her and were shaped by her strength, wisdom, and unconditional love.
Velma Ree Hicks will be remembered for her gentle spirit, resilience, and unwavering devotion to those she loved. Her legacy of compassion and family-first values will continue to live on in the countless lives she touched and the generations she helped shape.
Funeral services will be held at McDuffie Funeral Home 1525 Broadway Gary, IN 46407 on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Viewing at 9:00AM with funeral immediately following at 11:00. She will be laid to rest at Fern Oak Cemetery. Condolences may be emailed to
