Virgil Moore Jr. was born on October 20,1934 in Rosedale, Arkansas to the union of Virgil Sr. and Samella Moore. He later joined the U.S. Marine Corp. with tours in Japan and Okinawa, and he earned an honorable discharge in 1957.
Virgil worked at Inland Steel. He held several other jobs around Gary during his 91 years on earth, but during the bulk of his life, he was mainly known as "The Tax Man."
Virgil had a strong work ethic. While at the United States Post Service, he enrolled at Indiana University Northwest along the way to earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. He became a public accountant, and he joined the accounting firm of Leroy Clark as a partner from 1971 to 1987. He later passed the Certified Public Accounting Exam and went to work as a controller at Gary Neighborhood Services. He returned to Indiana University Northwest to complete his Master's degree in Public and Environmental Affairs. Then he left Gary Neighborhood Services after 15 years, and he opened a public-accounting practice at 504 Broadway, where he spent decades serving families and businesses throughout Northwest Indiana.
Virgil pledged Kappa Alpha Psi at the age of 35 to earn lifetime membership with the fraternity, but his biggest devotion was to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In 1987, he joined Koinonia Missionary Baptist Church, and he was ordained as a deacon. He remained faithful to its ministries until his passing. He also had the pleasure of rendering the prayer with the Gary Common Council for over 24 years.
Virgil was proceeded in death by the following: Rosie; his parents Virgil Sr. and Samella; sisters Julia, Willabea, Jimme Ree, Curuth and Sarah Ann; and brothers Samuel and James.Virgil is survived by two children Kelly and Joilyn Moore; grandchildren Deonta and Kelsey Moore, Myah Williams, Tajanae, King, and Kelly Moore; great grandchildren Devion, Kameron and Kyra Moore; and exceptional nephew David Thompson.
