Virginia Spina 83, of Orleans, MA, formerly of Jamesville, NY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones on Sunday, March 1, 2026. She was pre-deceased by her husband Anthony and parents Harold Butler Ewing, Jr. and Mabelle Waltz Ewing. She was born in Northampton, MA on February 15, 1943.
A lifelong gardener, she sold perennials from her home garden, created award winning displays and floral arrangements for the New York State Fair, served as the president of several garden clubs and taught gardening and craft classes for many local adult education programs. One of her greatest successes was the creation of "The Perennial Travelers", a series of organized bus trips to public and private gardens throughout the Northeast.
An avid and prize-winning quilter, she was instrumental in the creation of the Town of Pompey (NY) Bicentennial quilt which hangs in the Pompey Town Hall.
After settling in Cape Cod, she enjoyed being involved in the Hydrangea Society and in recent years she artistically expressed herself through diverse mediums including encaustic painting, needle felting, Japanese needlework, and intricate beading.
She is survived by her four children: David and Tina (Gilberti) Spina of Southwick, MA; Andrew Spina of Wilton Manors, FL; daughter Katherine and her husband Philip Tuohy of Beverly, MA; Peter Spina and Shixin Han of Orleans, MA; and four grandchildren: Sienna Spina, Nicolas Spina, Emma Tuohy and John ("Jack") Tuohy.
We would like to extend our thanks to her team at The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital whose expert care enabled her to have six "bonus years", for which we are eternally grateful.
