Waldon Watts Ward, Jr. of Raleigh, NC passed away peacefully in his hometown of Smithfield, NC in the early morning hours of December 15th. He was 81 years old. The service will be held at 11:00 am on January 10, 2026 at Cary Presbyterian Church at 614 Griffis St, Cary, NC 27511.
"Watts", as he was called by everyone who knew him, was preceded in death by his wife Brenda who passed away in May of 2025.
Watts is survived by his Brother John G. Ward of Smithfield, NC, his 2 sons, Matthew Waldon and Michael Terry, both of Fuquay Varina, NC and their spouses, Bathsheba and Alison and four grandchildren, Lily, Michaela, Delia, and Watts.
Watts joined the United States Air Force in 1963 where he trained in aircraft maintenance. After 4 years in the service, he came to Raleigh to work at RDU airport. He fell in love with his next door neighbor and bride-to-be, Brenda. After a short engagement, they married and moved to Tulsa, OK so Watts could attend Airframe and Powercraft School. They moved back to Raleigh a couple of years later where Watts continued his career as an aviation mechanic and they began a family. Watts worked in the aviation industry for the next 50 years. His career allowed him to travel the world and have many wonderful experiences.
During the 80's and 90's, Watts served as an assistant scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 216 in Cary and coached little league baseball.
Watts also joined the Cary Masonic Lodge #198 where he became Master in 2004. During his time at the lodge, he "mastered" Eastern NC BBQ pig pickins with the help of his Masonic brethren. He also was a member of the Shriners.
His true love and passion was spending time with his wife, Brenda, and their community of close friends at Emerald Isle, NC where they both enjoyed a sunset retirement at their happy place. They spent many joyful hours with the close friends they made at the beach.
Watts made a significant impact on many people throughout his life. He was loved and will be deeply missed by many, but never forgotten.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The SECU Hospice House of UNC Health Johnston in Smithfield, NC. They are a wonderful team of people who helped us through a very difficult time.
Following the service, we will greet friends and family at the Cary Masonic Lodge at 1142 SE Maynard Rd #2 in Cary, NC 27511 for Masonic Rites and a "Watts Ward" inspired BBQ lunch feast. Watts never wanted to send anyone away hungry, so we are going to honor his tradition!
If you are able to attend the BBQ luncheon, please RSVP Bathsheba at
[email protected] by December 31st.
