Wally Waldan Lloyd

1946 - 2026

Wally Waldan Lloyd, our loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home, surrounded by his family, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

Wally was born on March 18, 1946, in Mobile, Alabama, to Harold and Edith Lloyd. He was raised in Kearns, Utah, where he enjoyed a happy childhood, excelled in school, and was active in the Boy Scouts. From an early age, Wally developed a deep love of music, especially big band jazz. In high school, he played bass clarinet and tenor saxophone with The Continentals, a dance band that performed at many local functions.

Wally graduated from Granger High School in 1964 and briefly attended Johns Hopkins University before serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in North Germany, an experience that would shape his lifelong love of language, culture, and traveling to new places.

Following his mission, Wally earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Utah, majoring in German Literature with a minor in Music. He later received his Juris Doctor from the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law in 1974.

Wally enjoyed a distinguished 51-year legal career as a nationally recognized expert in the complicated field of Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) compliance. He advised clients on the design and operation of retirement plans, deferred compensation programs, and welfare plans – serving everyone from individuals and small businesses to large, publicly traded companies with tens of thousands of employees. Known for his sharp mind and steady approach, Wally had a remarkable ability to navigate complex challenges and find practical solutions. He also represented clients in Department of Labor investigations and IRS examinations.

Wally received the prestigious honor of being a Charter Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel (ACEBC), one of the inaugural, distinguished members inducted in 2000. In 2024, he was honored as Lawyer of the Year for Employee Benefits Law by The Best Lawyers in America®. More than anything, Wally loved the relationships he built throughout his career and the opportunity to solve meaningful problems for the people he served.

In 1991, Wally married Colette Wilson, and together they created a loving and vibrant family, blending her four children with his two daughters. Wally cherished time with his family and had a passion for travel, creating lasting memories traveling with Colette and their children.

Wally is preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother, Gary. He is survived by his beloved wife, Colette Lloyd; his six children, Angie Pistorius (Mark Patella), Heather Pistorius, Zach Pistorius, Kristina Pistorius, Catie Tufts (Daryn), and Christina Kowallis (Jason); and his 12 grandchildren, ages 29 to 7.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the IHC hospice nurses for their compassionate care, as well as to the many friends and family members who visited, supported, and shared in remembering Wally during his final days.

A celebration of Wally’s life will be held on Friday, March 27, 2026, from 4:00–7:00 p.m. at 6720 S. Tall Oak Lane, Murray, Utah, for friends and family. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to bring a hosta plant (Wally’s favorite) to be added to the hosta garden at his home, where his memory will continue to grow.
