Walter Edward Gates
September 28, 1950 – March 1, 2026
Walter Edward Gates, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and guide to many, passed away peacefully on March 1, 2026, at 2:25 p.m. PST in Florence, Oregon.
Born on September 28, 1950, in Providence, Rhode Island, Walter was the middle child of Walter and Alice Gates. He grew up alongside his older brother Bobby and younger sister Jannett.
As a young man, Walter answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Stationed in Puerto Rico, he played a vital role in anti-submarine operations. It was during this time that he met Pamela Wolber and her daughter Karina. Walter and Pamela later married and moved to California, where they welcomed their son, Stephen Gates.
Walter’s life was marked by profound personal transformation. Overcoming struggles with alcoholism and anger, he embarked on a journey of self-discovery that shaped him into a man known for his compassion, wisdom, and steady presence. Through his own healing process, Walter became a source of guidance and inspiration to countless others, helping them find clarity and connection in their own lives.
A gifted teacher and mentor, Walter had an extraordinary ability to meet people where they were and gently guide them forward. He often shared the poetry of the Persian mystic Rumi as a tool for reflection and growth, inviting others to explore its meaning in their own lives.
Approximately 33 years ago, Walter met Jane Gates, the love of his life. Together they built a partnership rooted in honesty, accountability, and mutual growth. Their life together was both rich and simple — centered on peace, love, and introspection. As a couple, they became a source of light for many, offering wisdom and compassion while exemplifying the beauty of conscious partnership.
Walter was also a proud grandfather to Ceanna, Zaca, and Mila Gates. He cherished every moment spent with them and left an indelible mark on their lives through his quiet strength and kindness. His presence will continue to guide them in the years ahead.
Walter is remembered as a seeker and teacher who faced life’s challenges with courage and transformed them into opportunities for purpose and love. His legacy lives on through his wife Jane; his son Stephen; his grandchildren Ceanna, Zaca, and Mila; and the countless individuals whose lives he touched with his wisdom and compassion.
In the words of Rumi that Walter often shared:
“This place is a dream.
Only a sleeper considers it real.
Then death comes like dawn,
and you wake up laughing
at what you thought was your grief.”
A celebration of Walter’s life will be held Saturday, April 11th, 2026, from 2 pm -5 pm at the house on the river.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Walter’s memory by living with greater awareness, compassion, and love.
