Walter H. Grigsby, of Gary, Indiana, passed away on January 21, 2026, surrounded by love and the presence of those who cherished him most.
Born on April 3, 1941, to Harrison Grigsby and Rose Lee (McDonald) Grigsby in Gary, Indiana. From this union ten children were born, with Walter being the 9th child. His life was defined by service, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family. From an early age, he learned the value of hard work, responsibility, and standing firm in the face of life's challenges, principles that shaped the man he became and the legacy he leaves behind.
Walter was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt high school. He also proudly served his country as a Vietnam War Veteran, answering the call of duty with honor, courage, and sacrifice. His military service was a source of great pride, and he carried those lessons of discipline, loyalty, and perseverance with him throughout his life. After returning home, he built a long and respected career at U.S. Steel Mill, where he worked for more than 50 years before retiring. Known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and steadfast commitment, Walter earned the respect and admiration of his coworkers and supervisors alike.
Walter had a strong interest in politics, and he enjoyed staying informed about current events by listening to the radio and engaging in thoughtful conversations about history and the world around him.
Walter was spiritually grounded and found joy in speaking about God, the Muslim faith, and the importance of treating people right, regardless of their flaws. He believed that character mattered and often shared that he could sense a good person simply by being around them. He taught that paying attention to how someone behaves and speaks reveals the spirit they carry within them.
Above all else, Walter was a devoted father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was deeply cherished by his family and known for his steady presence, quiet wisdom, and calm strength. He believed in showing up, being consistent, and taking care of those he loved. Loyalty and honesty were values he lived by, and he led by example in both words and actions.
For six years, Walter courageously battled ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), facing the disease with remarkable strength, dignity, and resilience. Despite the challenges it brought, he remained comforted and supported by those closest to him, leaving a powerful example of endurance and grace.
