Wanda Webb Evans, 91, a kind, introspective soul, died at peace in the presence of her family on March 25, 2026. Wanda was born in Anton, Texas to Alvin Jonah Webb and Lexie McCarty Webb, and she was a South Plains resident for most of her life.
Wanda held a lifelong passion for writing. Her first article was published in in 1972, and she subsequently published dozens of articles and several books. She was an editorial page writer at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal in the 1980s and 1990s. A working mother throughout the childhood of her children, she found time to research subjects for her articles and books. The 1978 publication of her book, One Honest Man: George Mahon, A Story of Power, Politics and Poetry, was preceded by years of research and interviews, including with Congressman Mahon himself.
She was often to be found in what spare time she had reading a book. An avid reader, she inspired this love in her children and grandchildren.
In the last weeks of her life, bedridden, her sight severely limited by macular degeneration, and her hand shaking with Parkinsonian tremor, she requested a notebook so that she could write.
While her lifelong passion was writing, her zeal for Neil Diamond and Harry Potter was well known in her later years. She listened to Harry Potter and Neil non-stop in her room in the nursing home, often having anyone who came in restart the cd that was playing.
The eldest of five daughters, Wanda was more than just a big sister to the younger girls, she was a role model. As adults, the families of the five women spent joyous times celebrating holidays, milestone events, and often just because it was time for a celebration. She was happiest at these times, while the adults sat at card tables playing 42 and the children disappeared in the bedrooms of the ranch style house on 114 or in the surrounding cotton fields.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Linda Hurt and Nora Menard, and her sons Kyle Webb Evans and Roger Craig Evans. She is survived by her daughters Christi Evans and Martha Evans, both of Lubbock, daughter-in-law Janet Evans of Greybull, Wyoming, sisters Janice Freedle of Auburn, Washington and Nan Honeycutt of Lubbock. Wanda has six grandchildren, Dustin Gabus of Oklahoma City, Audrey Evans and Kate Wells, both of Abilene, Martin Evans of Tucson, Arizona, Daniel Simpson of Lubbock, and Lexie Evans of Greybull, Wyoming. She has two great-grandchildren along with a multitude of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
