Wayne R. Strickland, 78, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully December 5th at the Bailey Family Center for Caring, surrounded by his loving family.
Born and raised in St. Augustine, the son of Selby “Sub” and Rosemary Strickland, Wayne was proud of his Minorcan heritage. He is survived by his devoted wife Paula; his daughter Laura and husband Kelly; his son Stephen and wife Melissa; his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; the families of his siblings; and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
He graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1966. For 57 years he was happily married to Paula; as a faithful Catholic, together they built a family he cherished above all else.
Wayne honorably served in the Florida Army National Guard for over 41 years, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer IV and Department of Military Affairs Facilities Officer. He formed lifelong friendships with many of his fellow Guardsmen and set the tone for a life of selfless public service. He was a founding member and Commander of the Historic St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office 4-Wheel Drive Posse Unit alongside his dear friend the late Sheriff Neil J. Perry. He was a Reserve Deputy with the Sheriff’s Office and an EMT with St. Johns County Fire Rescue. He was also an active member of the St. Augustine Boating Club and served as its Commodore in 2016-17.
A graveside service with full military honors will be held at San Lorenzo Catholic Cemetery on Wednesday, December 17, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Community Hospice Foundation – The Bailey Family Center for Caring or San Sebastian Catholic Church in Wayne’s memory.
