William Edward “Ed” Massey Jr., age 69, passed away on December 23, 2025, in Anchorage, Alaska.
Born on February 15, 1956, in San Antonio, Texas, Ed lived a life marked by service, adventure, and deep devotion to his family.
Ed proudly served in the United States Army for 11 years before being medically retired in 1983. During his military career, he worked in both Infantry and as a Track Vehicle Mechanic. He achieved the rank of E5/Sergeant and was recognized with several honors for his dedication and skill. His awards included the Good Conduct Medal (2nd Award), National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and the prestigious Expert Infantryman’s Badge.
After his military service, Ed began a career in the Corrections field starting while living in North Carolina. In 1990 he and his family moved back to Alaska where he eventually began his career in 1991 with the State of Alaska Dept. of Corrections in Seward, Alaska. He retired from there as a CO3/Shift Supervisor in 2016.
Ed continued to embrace life with vigor and enthusiasm. He had a deep love for the outdoors and found joy in hunting, camping, ATV riding, motorcycle riding, and shooting. These passions were more than hobbies—they were ways for him to connect with family and friends, creating lasting memories through stories of his many adventures.
Ed’s greatest pride was his family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Shirley Massey; his children: Jennifer Massey-Razvillas of Missouri; Wm. Larry Massey of Seward, Alaska; and Chrystal (Ryan) Maddox of Eagle River, Alaska. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Caleb, Jacob, and Alyssa Razvillas; Cory Barber; Jacksyn and Brooklyn Massey; Lillian and Amiya Watkins; Ethan and Kasey Maddox. He also leaves behind his sisters Brenda Reeves and Elizabeth Smith along with their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William E. Massey Sr. and Tommie Lee Massey, as well as grandparents and other beloved family members who went before him.
A celebration of Ed’s life will be held in late spring or early summer to honor the man who gave so much to those around him—in service to his country and in love for his family.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
