Wyatt Barnes Cosby, third of his name (11/10/1949–3/9/2026) of York, Maine, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by the people who loved him most.
Known far and wide as Biff.
Though he called Maine home, the New Hampshire state motto fit him better: Live Free or Die. That was Biff through and through. A perfect day meant coffee in the morning with Mary while his two sons strummed their guitars (loudly) within earshot, then taking the backroads to Laconia on his Harley. Chasing the wind, dinner with old friends upon arrival, and a better story waiting at the end.
Biff was born in Allston, Massachusetts. As a kid, he moved quite a few times from state to state with his family. He landed in Detroit, Michigan for a few years and he carried that same blue-collar toughness and big heart with him everywhere he went. Eventually in his teenage years, Biff moved back to Allston where he made lifelong friends on the corner of Franklin and Holton Street in front of the neighborhood store called Honey Farms. He made many cherished memories hanging on the corner and counted them as some of the best times of his life. This happens to also be where he met his beloved wife, Mary.
He wasted no time joining the workforce and at age thirteen he got his first job driving a moving truck. As soon as he made enough money, he purchased his first Harley and never looked back. Later on he became a concrete truck driver in the city of Boston and he worked with McNamara Concrete (later named Aggregate Industries) for over 30 years. He made so many great friends working there and stayed in touch with many of them throughout the years. The road was his passion, and Biff could be found behind the wheel of a truck or on his motorcycle his entire life, never stopping until his body forced him to slow down at 76.
He loved and protected his family fiercely. He was so proud of them. Nothing lit him up quite like watching his two boys Matthew and Andrew play music live on stage or coming home from a long day’s work and sharing a dance in the kitchen with Mary to some Motown music. He loved the Patriots (especially Tom Brady), motorcycles, leather jackets, his extended family, lifelong friends, his country, and of course The Rolling Stones turned up just a little too loud. He enjoyed adventuring down to Martha’s Vineyard to visit Matt and his partner Kelsey to try one of her latest baked goods, cruise the beach in their Jeep, and take a dip in the cold Atlantic. Another favorite pastime was watching movies with his sons and sharing with them a lifelong passion for the music of his era. Journey and Led Zeppelin were a couple of his all-time favorites. He loved his children deeply and guided them to be strong, kind, and honorable men. But nothing meant more to him than Mary. Highschool sweethearts, she was the absolute light of his life. You rarely saw them apart and even after 48 years of marriage they still had a love that so many yearn for.
Biff loved to cook and around the holidays, friends and family would start texting and calling like clockwork, asking when his famous “Cosby Cookies” would be ready for consumption. One batch was never enough, and anyone who tried them was hooked for life. He was happiest with a full house and a full grill, hosting backyard BBQs, lobster bakes, and his legendary annual “Meatball Run” where friends he grew up riding with would roll into town on their Harleys, eat like kings, and then head out on a summer cruise together. He also had this gift where he could fix just about anything and if he said he’d be there, he was. Steady, dependable, and strong. The kind of person you could always count on.
He came from nothing and never asked anyone for a handout; everything he had in life was earned through determination and perseverance. He built a life through hard work, loyalty, and love, and the family he leaves behind will carry that legacy forward with pride.
He faced his battle with cancer with grit, dignity, and his signature sense of humor. Making people smile and laugh right up until the very end. He was so much more than a diagnosis. He was larger than life. Always was.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 48 years, Mary McAuliffe Cosby; his sons, Andrew, Matthew and daughter in law, Kelsey; his sisters, Gloria Cosby Molinari and Joy Cosby Wallace; his brother-in-law Edward McAuliffe; sisters-in-law, Maureen McAuliffe and Barbara McCauley and her husband Ronald McCauley; and many wonderful friends, nieces and nephews whom he adored.
Extra special thank you to Biff's dearest friends Joe Arena and Kevin Quinn for being by his bedside throughout his journey and being such a strong support to the Cosby family.
He’ll be missed forever by so many. We like to picture him now the way he’d want to be:
The open road ahead, engine rumbling, the wind at his back, sun on his face, heading out on one long endless ride.
